Srinagar: At the budget session of Jammu and Kashmir legislature that started today, a united opposition disrupted the Governor's address and demanded the resignation of a BJP minister for his alleged controversial remarks about Muslims. One of the legislators even questioned the position of the Governor.
As soon as Governor NN Vohra started his speech, opposition members shouted anti-government slogans.
The PDP-BJP government is facing criticism over a range of controversial issues, including the move to set up a colony for retired soldiers, settlement colonies for Kashmiri migrant pandits and the implementation of the Food Security Act NFSA.
The National Conference and the Congress legislators staged a walkout and held protests outside the House. But Independent lawmaker Engineer Rashid stayed and raised slogans against the Governor.
"You are not my Governor. As per instrument of accession with Union of India, Jammu and Kashmir should have an elected Sadre Reyasat, not a Governor appointed by Delhi," shouted Mr Rashid.
Earlier, the opposition members demanded the resignation of BJP leader Lal Singh, who is also the forest minister in Mehbooba Mufti's government. Mr Singh has been accused of telling a delegation of Gujjars from Jammu that they can face situation similar to the 1947 communal riots.
Mr Singh first denied the allegation and said he was talking about the 47-degree temperature and not the tragedies of 1947. But later, in a statement, he apologised for his controversial remark.
But the opposition was not satisfied with the apology and asked Ms Mufti to sack Mr Singh. "We want roll back of NFSA," added Ali Mohammad Sagar, who is also the general secretary of National Conference.
Holding a banner demanding action against the troops involved in killing of 5 civilians in security forces firing in Kupwara last month, Mr Rashid accused Ms Mufti of changing her political ideology to please the BJP.
