Cheap potatoes for Kolkata

In Kolkata, potato prices have spiraled, from 12 rupees a kilo last month to 16 to 18 rupees a kilo on Friday.

Now, the Bengal government has decided to step in. From Saturday, the government will set up stalls in 12 markets across Kolkata and sell potatoes at 13 rupees a kilo.

At first, Kolkata heaved a sigh of relief that the government had finally stepped in to control the price of something which is almost a staple at every meal - potatoes.

"Potatoes are such an essential, we need them everyday at every meal and so we have to buy them at any price. But I've heard the government will step in," said Monica Dutt, customer.

But then came the fine print. At 13 rupees a kilo instead of Rs 16 to 18, the government deal is a bargain. But you will get only two kilos per person and not the best variety.

"I have to stand in a queue. And what about the quality? When government buys things in bunk, you are never sure of the quality. So, I will not go there," said a Kolkata resident.

So, the government's plan to turn potato seller may be a boon to some but for many it's an idea that's come too late and will do too little.
