A team from the Mumbai Police Crime Branch is likely to go to Indonesia to get the gangster back to India.

Mumbai: Even before arrested gangster Chhota Rajan is brought to India from Indonesia, the Mumbai Police have started working on case papers spanning a crime career of 40 years to ensure they have everything ready to prosecute him when he returns.

"As soon as we got information from the CBI, we prepared documents and sent it to them which have been submitted onwards through the Ministry of External Affairs. We will do as the CBI instructs is to do hereafter," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Atulchandra Kulkarni told reporters.

A team from the Mumbai Police Crime Branch is likely to go to Indonesia to get the gangster back to India. Sources have told NDTV that this team too faces a threat and they will be discussing security concerns with Indonesian authorities.

The police are also taking no chances with the underworld don's security as they believe there may be attempts to eliminate him while he is in police custody. All necessary precautions for security are being taken including help from the home country during his stay in Indonesia. Once he is back, the police say a lot of pending cases can be solved by questioning him.

"We are looking at a crime career of 40 years and we have prepared a team of officers to work on this. No team has left from here yet," Mr Kulkarni added.

The Mumbai Police are likely to house him in the Crime Branch lock up. Security at the lock up is also being re-examined. There's a lock up inside the Mumbai Police Headquarters that is already heavily guarded. 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab, 26/11 handler Abu Jundal, underworld dons Abu Salem and Arun Gawli have all been kept in this lock up before.

When asked by when Chhota Rajan is expected to be back in India, Mr Kulkarni said, "Time frame depends on diplomatic relations with the concerned country. We can look at his return in a couple of weeks as we have a treaty with Indonesia."
