Chidambaram asks people to elect only honest politicians

Puducherry: Amid the raging debate over probity in public life in wake of the 2G spectrum issue, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today urged people to elect only honest and efficient politicians to achieve rapid development.

"Those who are so elected should remain honest and efficient during the entire tenure in office. They should not commit mistakes knowingly," he said inaugurating a bridge and a renovated temple tank here.

Referring to the delay in completing the bridge work (which commenced in 2005) Chidambaram said," while we are able to achieve greater things in space technology, aviation, rocket science and other areas, activities like road and bridge construction were running into delays due to various practical issues".

"We are capable of achieving anything. We should sort out the issues and move ahead," he said.

Chidambaram said the Puducherry Government had taken steps to fill nearly 700 vacancies in the police department.

Puducherry Chief Minister V Vaithilingam said the renovated Karaikal Ammaiyar temple tank was a fitting example of communal harmony as people of all religions showed interest in the project.
