Chidambaram: Home Ministry should be re-defined

New Delhi: Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that it's time to restructure the Ministry of Home Affairs.

"In my view, the Ministry of Home Affairs will have to be divided. Those issues with no connection with terror ..should not be with the Home Minister. The Home Ministry should devote time only to internal security," he said.

Chidambaram also called for a new format of security agencies to deal with terrorism.  He highlighted the need for a central command structure during large-scale attacks like 26/11. For this, he said a National Counter-Terrorism Centre has to be set up within the next year.

'Jihadi tactics are being copied by other insurgent groups including Hindu groups,' he said. The need to create a full-proof mechanism to track foreigners is urgent, he added, referring to the David Headley case.

The minister was delivering the 22nd Intelligence Bureau Centenary Endowment lecture in New Delhi.

David Coleman Headley, a US national, made multiple trips to India before 26/11.  He has been arrested in Chicago by the FBI for helping to plan and execute the Mumbai attacks as an undercover agent of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
