Chief Justice creates additional Forest Bench

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Justice SH Kapadia on Friday streamlined the hearing of environmental issues and appointed an additional bench to hear the cases.

Taking into considerations the delay in cases relating to mining, forest etc, the Chief Justice has taken this step.

Till now there was a single bench headed by the Chief Justice to hear the environment related cases, now there will be two benches.

The first forest bench headed by the Chief Justice will hear cases on every Friday relating to mining, forests, projects and other policy matters connected with these subjects.

The second bench will sit on Mondays and hear issues relating to Saw mills, licence, sandal wood related cases, construction of roads in forests and cases relating to wild life, tigers, Bird sanctuaries etc.

On July 23, the first Forest Bench will take up the Noida Park which houses large statues of Kanshi Ram and Mayawati. The apex court had earlier stayed further construction in the park.

Though the Centre supported the park, the court sought report from Centre on the impact of cutting of around 6000 trees for the construction and its impact on the adjourning Okhla Bird sanctuary. Centre is likely to file the report by next week.
