Chief Justice Justifies Holding Conference on a Holiday

The Chief Justice further defended his decision saying the conference has been held on national holidays in previous years as well.

New Delhi:

The Chief Justice of India, HL Dattu, today defended holding a conference on Good Friday, a national holiday, saying he only wants to make sure that the work of courts across the country is not affected.

He also said it is not the first time that judges are working on a holiday.

"In 2007, we had the judges' conference on Good Friday, in 2009 it was held on Independence Day and in 2004 it was held on Valmiki Day," Justice Dattu said.

He explained that 24 judges are expected to attend the annual conference of Chief Justices. "The work at courts across the country should not be affected. So the judges took this decision to have this conference (on Good Friday)," Justice Dattu said.

He was responding to Lilly Thomas, a Supreme Court lawyer, who told him in court today that the conference should be held on another day because Good Friday is important for Christians.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known to be a workaholic, acknowledged criticism that he makes people work on holidays.

Speaking at an event in Madhya Pradesh, Mr Modi had said, "...people always say about me - what kind of a Prime Minister is he? He doesn't let anyone spend birthdays, Holi...he has no other work. I bow to your complaints."
