A child and three women were among nine killed when a car collided head-on with a truck on the Mumbai-Goa highway this morning.
According to police, the accident took place near Mangaon in Maharashtra's Raigad district, about 130 km from Mumbai, around 5 am today.
The dead include five men. A child injured in the accident has been rushed to the hospital, police said.
The victims, all of them relatives, were residents of Hedvi village in Ratnagiri district's Guhagar town, news agency PTI reported, quoting senior police officer Somnath Gharge. While the car was headed to Guhagar, the truck was on its way to Mumbai.
Such was the impact of the head-on crash that the car was mangled beyond recognition. Visuals also showed significant damage to the truck.
The police officer said as soon as they received information about the accident, a team rushed to the spot. Traffic movement on the highway was affected for a short duration, but has resumed now. Police are investigating the incident, the officer said.
The bodies of the victims have been sent to a government hospital for autopsy, the officer said.
