Srinagar: Senior BJP leader LK Advani today asked China to open the Kailash Mansarovar yatra route through Ladakh for the convenience of pilgrims.

"China should accept India's appeal to open the Kailash Mansarovar route through Ladakh so that yatris do not have to go via Nepal," Mr Advani said after inaugurating the Sindhu Darshan festival, also known as Shinghey Khababs festival in Ladakhi parlance, at Leh, 434 kms from Srinagar.

He also suggested inviting Nobel Laureate and spiritual leader the Dalai Lama to the festival in future.

Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said, "The Sindhu festival, which was started by Advaniji (in 2001), has now become a festival of international standards with a number of visitors from different parts of the world coming here every year."

The festival drawing a large number of people from different parts of the country is organised by Ladakh Phandey Tsogspa every year.
