Hyderabad: In Hyderabad, there have been at least 12 deaths due to contaminated water, and hundreds are in hospital. Now, an outbreak of cholera has shown just how cities like these, which are in a hurry to touch the skies, don't seem to realise that the ground under its feet is sinking.

Despite the 30 registered cholera cases in Hyderabad in the last one week, health authorities say there is no need to worry about the outbreak of an epidemic.

"Every month we are getting less virulent strains that are being treated for 14-16 hours and is not leading to any death. So there is no need for alarm," said Ramesh Chandra, Director, Health, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

Bholakpur area in Hyderabad, which has reported 12 deaths and over 200 in hospital following contamination of drinking water, is proving to be the epicentre. But the worry is that cholera cases are being reported from elsewhere as well. And the problem is that many are not providing their residential address for fear of being evicted.

"Patients are not giving their address. So it is difficult to trace and that could be danger to community," said L V Subrahmanyam, Principal Secretary, Health in Andhra Pradesh.

Reports of suspected cholera cases are coming in from the districts as well. The health authorities are focussing on supplying zinc supplements, ensuring safe drinking water and spreading awareness about abuse of antibiotics and hygiene.
