Baripada, Odisha:
A Class 1 student of a government-run primary school drowned in a pond on the school premises in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district today, police said. Yesh Singh, 5, was playing near the pond when he slipped and fell into it at Girima Primary School in Karanjia village, some 300 kilometres from state capital Bhubaneshwar, police said.
The boy was immediately taken to a hospital, where the doctors said he died on the way. Residents blocked a road near the hospital seeking action against the school authorities for allegedly not paying attention to security at the school.
Karanjia block education officer Abhiram Patra suspended the school's principal Arati
Mishra, after which the residents agreed to end the road blockade.
Police said they are investigating the case.
