Jodhpur: Police in Rajasthan have registered a case after a class 11 student alleged that she was stripped and sexually assaulted by her own classmates on the first day of school in Jodhpur last week.

The student who joined the Sohanlal Manihar Girls Senior Secondary School on July 8, has told the police that she was forced into a bathroom, stripped, beaten and also touched inappropriately by her own classmates who wanted to haze her as she was a new student.

The police have registered a case under the against the accused - all of them students of class 11 - and the school administration who allegedly did not report the matter to the police.

In an emotional letter to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and the Rajasthan police chief, the girl has asked for justice, saying the incident has left her scarred.

"This incident has left me shattered and without a desire to live... The virus of ragging has now reached schools and strict steps should be taken to put an end to it," she wrote.

The police said they have sent one of the accused to a girls' home and are now investigating the case.

The victim has undergone a medical examination and will record her statement before a magistrate.

"According to her FIR, they followed her to the bathroom during the interval and locked her in. The girl was from her own class who did this. She threatened her, pushed her and told her to take clothes off. She called some of her other friends. They also beat her and molested her," Manish Dev, a police officer, said.

The school administration has said they ordered an inquiry into the incident three days later but could not find any proof that it had happened.

Faced with a police case, they now say they are inquiring into the matter and have suspended five students.

"We have set up a second inquiry and suspended the accused students till it is complete," said Hari Gopal Rathi, secretary of the Mahesh Shikshan Sansthan which manages the school.
