Class VII girl attacked in West Bengal town

Kolkata: A girl, studying in class VII, was allegedly attacked by a group of boys in West Bengal's Barasat, a town on the outskirts of Kolkata. A few people, who came to help the girl, were also reportedly beaten up.

"There were five boys and they beat me up mercilessly. I have been bruised all over with injuries on my hand, abdomen and legs. I can recognise all of them," the victim said.

According to the girl, she had gone to a local tailoring shop on Eid when the group of boys passed comments on her. When she retaliated, the boys assaulted her.

"We were badly beaten. These boys (the accused) always hang out here; they do drugs and tease girls," said one of the boys, who tried to intervene and help the girl.

The accused are missing and the police are yet to pick up anyone even for questioning.

This is the second case of crime against women from Barasat in the last one month.

"We have girls at home. With such threats will they now stay at home and remain illiterate. We want action against the guilty," said one of the residents of the town.

"It is difficult to leave our girls alone now. Let authorities do something so that this is not repeated," another resident added.

According to figures by the National Crime Records Bureau, 29000 cases of violence against women were recorded in the last one year. West Bengal registered the highest number of such cases in 2011.
