Class XII results out, few takers for IT

Chennai: The CBSE has declared results for the class XII examinations in Ajmer, Chennai and Panchkula regions.  And for students like that of the DAV Boys School in Chennai, Hariharan was the VIP. He had topped the commerce stream with 488 marks out of 500.

"I want to do my CA and I'll be joining in the next three months," he said.

With the recession taking its toll on the IT sector, IT is slowly losing its status as the most sought after branch.

"The trend is towards Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communications and even Commerce," said Dr C Sathish Principal, DAV Boys School.

Ever since the Tamil Nadu government scrapped the entrance examination for admission to professional colleges, experts say CBSE students came under pressure.

So for parents, it was a challenge to provide children a stress free atmosphere at home.

"We have to give them the freedom, we should not pressurise them and there should be no compulsion," said Vijayalakshmi, a parent.

For many, it is just half the battle won, as results for the All India Entrance Examinations for admission to IITs and other institutes are yet to come.
