Cold Intensifies in North India, 5 Die in Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi: Cold wave intensified its grip on the northern region with mercury dipping to sub-zero levels in some parts and snuffing out five lives in Uttar Pradesh while dense fog threw transport systems out of gear in most areas.

Delhi residents continued to feel the chill the minimum temperature was recorded at 9 degree Celsius and the maximum settled at 19.3 degree Celsius even as the city recorded 13.3 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours till 8:30 AM.

Mount Abu, the sole hill station in Rajasthan, recorded the coldest night of the winter season recording a low of 0.4 degree Celsius causing upper layer of Nakki Lake to freeze in the morning.

Fog in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana caused delay in arrival of seven trains, while as many more were running late from 50 minutes to 10 hours, an NWR spokesman said.

Cold conditions prevailed at many places in Punjab and Haryana with Amritsar being the coldest place at a low of 3 degrees Celsius while Chandigarh recorded a low of 7.6 deg C.

Ludhiana and Patiala, however, recorded near normal minimum temperatures of 9.3 deg C and 9.6 deg C, respectively.

In Haryana, Narnaul was the coldest place recording a low of 4 deg C, while Hisar experienced a cold night at 5.8 deg C.

Five persons died in different parts of Uttar Pradesh due to cold and fog-related mishaps in the last 24 hours. While two persons died due to cold in Kushinagar, one death was reported in Maharajganj, Ghazipur and Etawah each, official sources said.

As light rain and thundershowers occurred at isolated places in the state, temperatures fell markedly in Agra, fell appreciably in Bareilly and Jhansi divisions, fell in Kanpur, Lucknow.
