New Delhi: The chill showed no signs of relenting in North India as mercury on Monday dropped by several notches in the region which witnessed widespread rains and snowfall last week-end.

Dense fog enveloped the national capital in the morning disrupting road and air traffic as the minimum settled a notch below normal at 9.4 degrees Celsius.

The maximum in Delhi touched 20.7 degrees, which was three notches below normal, with the MeT office predicting similar conditions for Tuesday.

Himachal Pradesh reeled under biting cold with minimum temperatures in higher-and-mid hills falling a further three to five degrees.

The mercury dropped to -8.4 degrees in Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district while Manali recorded a low of -2.5 degrees, four notches below normal.

The minimum in Shimla was 2.3 degrees as moderate rainfall occurred in parts of the hill state.

The MeT office said Dalhousie received 20 mm rainfall followed by Sundernagar and Karsog with 9 mm each.

Night temperatures in Kashmir, too, dipped by several degrees with summer capital Srinagar recording a minimum of 1.7 degrees, a notch lower than 2.9 degrees the previous night.

The hill resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of -4.3 degrees as against -0.5 degrees on Sunday.

In the Ladakh region, Leh recorded a low of -10.8 degrees, a drop of six notches from -4.8 degrees on Sunday.

Conditions were not very different in Punjab and Haryana with the minimum dropping by up to three degrees at several places across both states.

Between the neighbours, it was Narnaul in Haryana which was the coldest place with a minimum of 6 degrees. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded 6.4 degrees following a drop by one notch in the minimum.

The MeT department said fog had hampered visibility at many places in the region including Amritsar, Bhiwani, Narnaul and Hisar.
