Cold wave continues to sweep north India, one dead in Reasi
New Delhi/Jammu: The cold wave sweeping north India today maintained its firm grip with Kargil town in
Jammu and Kashmir freezing at minus 16.4 degree Celsius and claiming the life of a man in the state's Reasi district.

The body of an unidentified middle-aged man was found in Reasi late last night and officials said he died due to the extreme cold conditions.

While the temperatures in Leh and Kargil were recorded at 16.2 degree Celsius and 16.4 degree respectively, Kashmir division continued to reel under the intense cold wave, the
meteorological office said.

The night temperature in Srinagar city, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, continued to stay two degrees below normal for this time of the year, settling at minus 5.0
degree Celsius.

Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, was the coldest place in the Valley, recording a minimum of minus 9.8 degrees Celsius, the official said.

Following the intense cold, parts of world famous Dal Lake and other water bodies in the Valley remain frozen, providing a rare experience for the tourists but bringing hardships to the Dal dwellers.

Delhiites woke up to another cold and gloomy morning as the mercury remained below the normal level. The minimum temperature was recorded at 5.3 degree Celsius, a degree more than yesterday's low of 4.2 degree but still two degrees below normal for this time of the year, the meteorological office said.

Fog added to the chill factor as there was no sign of the Sun to bring some warmth for the people reeling under intense cold. The city has been experiencing quite chilly days this
week and Tuesday was the coldest with both minimum and maximum dropping to season's lowest of 3.7 degree and 12.7 degree, respectively.

Icy winds blowing across the city for the last several days have also added to the woes of Delhiites. At least three cold-related deaths have been reported here since December 26.
In the Haryana-Punjab region, the cold wave sweeping it continued unabated, with fog once again throwing normal life out of gear.

Freezing cold gripped Narnaul in Haryana, which was the coldest place in the two states, recording a low of 0.5 degree Celsius, down four notches, the meteorological said here.

Icy cold winds swept Hisar, which recorded a low of 1.8 degree C, down three degrees, while the minimum at Bhiwani was 3 degree C, down three notches.Rohtak and Gurgaon also braved the chill recording respective minimums of 4 degree C and 5.5 degree C.

After recording its coldest day ever at a maximum of 7.4 degree C yesterday, the minimum at Chandigarh today settled at 5.7 degree C.

In Punjab, freezing chill swept Ludhiana and Patiala which recorded respective lows of 3.7 degree C and 3.5 degree C, both down by three notches each. Amritsar recorded a low of 4.8 degree C, two degrees above normal.
