After a brief respite, Delhi and its neighbouring states woke up to a chilly morning, with the weather office predicting a steep fall in temperature in the coming days.
The minimum temperature in the national capital was recorded 4.7 degrees Celsius this morning - a big drop from yesterday's 10. 2 degree Celsius.
The visibility in Palam area was about 200 meters.
Some flights scheduled to depart from the national capital were delayed due to a low visibility in the region, reported news agency ANI.
Cold wave conditions and foggy weather prevailed over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan as well.
Northern Railway officials said at least 20 trains were running late.
The weather office has issued an alert for intense cold wave conditions and fog between January 16 and 18, adding the minimum temperature at Ayanagar and Ridge in Delhi may settle around 3 degrees Celsius.
Officials have warned people of frostbite, asking them to limit their outdoor activity.
A weather expert has predicted temperatures in the plains dipping as far as -4 degrees Celsius between January 16 and 18.
"Don't know how to put this up but upcoming spell of #Coldwave in #India look really extreme during 14-19th January 2023 with peak on 16-18th, Never seen temperature ensemble going this low in a prediction model so far in my career. Freezing -4°c to +2°c in plains," he had tweeted.
The claim was refuted by the weather agency Skymet. "Delhi may witness a minimum of 3-4 degrees between 16 and 18 Jan but won't go below 0 degrees in any way. Isolated pockets may witness a minimum around 2 degrees," Skymet had said.
