New Delhi: Severe cold was reported in Delhi and several parts of north India with the weather office predicting cold wave conditions to prevail over the next two days.

  1. Temperatures have considerably dipped in Delhi Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan over the last week with the onset of a cold wave.

  2. In Delhi, the mercury plunged to 5.3 degrees Celsius on Sunday - three notches below normal - making it the coldest Christmas in the city in years.

  3. Dense fog covered Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. According to the Indian Metrological Department (Met), foggy conditions were likely to prevail in these areas till December 27.

  4. Most parts of Delhi, Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana witnessed minimum temperatures in the range of 3 to 7 degree Celcius, officials said.

  5. Officials said low visibility due to foggy weather has been affecting road and train movement at several places across the country. 

  6. Rajasthan is experiencing a record dip in mercury this year with the hill station of Mount Abu experiencing snowfall and Churu, the gateway to the Thar, recording zero degree Celsius.

  7. The weather department has also predicted foggy weather in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal over the next few days. Officials said Maharashtra will also witness a dip in temperature. 

  8. The weather office has predicted isolated snowfall over the Western Himalayan region. In Tamil Nadu, a yellow alert has been issued over the possibility of heavy rain in parts of state.

  9. In view of biting cold conditions, schools in Bihar's Patna will remain closed for students up to class 8 till the year-end, while Ghaziabad schools will function from 10 am to 3 pm for Class 1 to 8. 

  10. In Kashmir, cold conditions further intensified as the minimum temperature dipped several degrees below the freezing point. Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chilla-i-Kalan' - the 40-day harshest winter period.
