Coldwave grips north India, light showers in Delhi

New Delhi: Western disturbances over Jammu and Kashmir has caused a wet Tuesday morning in the capital which experienced light rains accompanied by nippy winds.

The Met office said that the showers are likely to continue through the day. The minimum temperature, however, remained three notches above average at 11.5 degrees Celsius due to cloudy weather.

According to the Met office temperatures will dip further by next week.

"There are chances of heavy rain and snowfall in middle and high hills across Himachal Pradesh on December 13 and 14," an official at the Met office said.

North India has been experiencing snowfall for the past few days. The night temperature across Kashmir dipped below freezing point with Leh in Ladakh remaining the coldest place in the region.

On Monday, the minimum temperature recorded at Leh, 434 kms from Srinagar, was minus 11.0 degrees Celsius. The night temperature in other parts of Kashmir also fell by a few notches and settled below freezing point.

The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest place in the valley with a low of minus 5.0 degrees Celsius, the spokesperson added.

He said Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius compared to 1.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir, which serves as a base camp during the annual Amarnath yatra, recorded a minimum of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius.

He said the mercury is expected to fall further as there is a possibility of fresh snowfall in the high reaches between December 12 and 16.

There was no respite from biting cold wave in Himachal Pradesh as minimum temperatures in most parts of the hilly state hovered around freezing point.

Keylong, the district headquarters of the Lahaul and Spiti, was the coldest place in the region with the low of minus 4.6 degree Celsius.

Strong icy winds lashed Shimla, resulting sharp fall in maximum and minimum temperatures which dropped to settle at 15.4 degree and 4.3 degree Celsius respectively even as sky remained partly clouded during the day.

Sundernagar recorded a night temperature at 4.1 degrees Celsius followed by Bhuntar 3.2 degrees, Mandi 3.1 degrees, Solan 2.8 degrees and Manali, the key tourist resort, at one degree Celsius.

Una was hottest with the day temperature recording at 25.8 degrees Celsius followed by Nahan 22.7 degrees, Sundernagar 22.3 degrees, Dharamsala and Bhuntar 21.5 degrees each, Solan 20.5 degrees and at Kalpa it was 12.2 degrees Celsius, the sources added.
