Delhi Pollution: The vehicles that run on petrol and CNG will have light blue stickers (File)
The Supreme Court has approved the central government's proposal to use colour-coded stickers in Delhi for classifying vehicles on the basis of fuel used. The scheme, which is based on a model used in Paris, entails using two types of stickers to distinguish between vehicles that run on petrol, CNG and diesel. The vehicles that run on petrol and CNG will have light blue stickers, while the diesel vehicles will have orange stickers.
The colour-coded vehicle scheme will help restrict the use of vehicles on days when the pollution levels are severe. The central government has supported the scheme and said it will be a more scientific way than the odd-even scheme.
The transport ministry told a bench headed by Justice MB Lokur that hologram-based sticker of light-blue colour will be used for petrol and CNG run vehicles while similar sticker of orange colour would be placed on diesel vehicles.
The bench also comprising justices S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta asked the ministry to implement the use of coloured stickers on vehicles operating in Delhi-National Capital Region by September 30.
The Supreme Court also asked Additional Solicitor General ANS Nadkarni, who was representing the ministry, to consider having green number plates for electric and hybrid vehicles. Mr Nadkarni told the court that the ministry would look into it and take a decision soon.
Advocate Aparajita Singh, assisting the court as amicus curiae in the air pollution matter, had earlier suggested to the bench that colour-coded stickers should be used to identify the nature of fuel being used in vehicles.
