New Delhi: The Commonwealth Games are expected to attract lakhs of international visitors to Delhi. The National Disaster Management Authority is now gearing up incase of a dirty bomb attack in the capital.
At AIIMS' Trauma Centre in New Delhi, doctors and nurses are getting trained on how to deal with victims of a dirty bomb attack.
"The worry is that terrorists can steal nuclear or chemical agents and use them in an explosion to make a dirty bomb," said Major General J K Bansal, coordinator, National Disaster Management Authority.
Delhi has always been high on the hit list and security forces are not taking any chances. A first of its kind device is used to detect if any nuclear material has been used in a crude bomb. A similar unit can be mounted on a helicopter to scan a larger area.
All this part of the enhanced security measures being implemented ahead of next year's Commonwealth Games.
"The urgency is because of the fact of the Commonwealth Games because we are expecting 500,000 people gathering in Delhi at that time. Players, media people, their families all gathering in Delhi, it's a huge event," said M C Moshra, director, AIIMS Trauma Centre.
The hope is that such a facility will never have to be used but experts say on their part they are not taking any chances and prefer being fully prepared.
