Cong seeks reply from party's UP chief, but rules out sacking
New Delhi:

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has expressed deep pain and anguish over events in Uttar Pradesh, involving party state chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi.

The congress, expressing regret over the statements made by the party leader, has said that it will seek explanation from Joshi after she is out of jail.

However, the party has also said that there is no question of her removal from the party till she replies.

Joshi, the Congress party's Uttar Pradesh chief, was arrested and put behind bars for making abusive and derogatory remarks against state Chief Minister Mayawati.

Earlier on Thursday, Sonia Gandhi had asked for a CD of what her comments were.

Just before her arrest of the UP leader, her home in Lucknow was set on fire, and five people were nabbed later over it.

Joshi was taken to Moradabad where she made those remarks on Wednesday. She was sent by a court to judicial custody for 14 days. The entire episode has triggered protests in UP and other parts of the country as well.
