New Delhi:
A Congress MP Dr Prabha Kishor Taviad broke down in Parliament today while narrating how she had not been allowed in at a government function in Gujarat. She claimed she had been assaulted by a policeman during the incident in Dahod and pointed to marks on her arms. Dr Taviad is the MP from Dahod.
Prompted by senior Congress leader and former National Commission for Women chief, Dr Girija Vyas, the MP, dressed in a pale salwar kameez, stood up to tell her story but began to sob, dabbing at her eyes and nose with a handkerchief. Dr Vyas requested the House to ensure that the Congress MP from Gujarat "get justice and her security be considered."
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, whose party the BJP rules Gujarat, promised to talk to Chief Minister Narendra Modi personally and said she would ensure that "this kind of incident doesn't happen in the future again."
Across parties, other MPs like Thambi Durai of the AIADMK and Lalu Prasad of the RJD rose to suggest that the security of MPs should not be taken lightly.
The Gujarat police has said they had information that Dr Taviad, along with other Congress leaders, would try to create trouble at the Gujarat Day celebrations and so arrived at her office and made what they claim was a preventive arrest.
