Congress, National Conference win Jammu and Kashmir legislative council polls

Congress, National Conference win Jammu and Kashmir legislative council polls
Srinagar: The ruling Congress-National Conference combine in Jammu and Kashmir today won all the four legislative council seats where elections were held earlier this week.

Elections for the four seats under the panchayat quota were held after a gap of 30 years. More than 33,000 panchayat members were eligible to vote. There were 37 candidates in the fray.

The National Conference and the Congress had fielded two candidates each for the seats.

The opposition, including the Peoples Democratic Party and the Panthers Party, fielded candidates for all four seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party contested three seats -- two in Jammu region and one in the Kashmir valley.

Campaigning for the elections witnessed a war of words between and National Conference and the PDP after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah accused the opposition party of bribing the women panchayat members with make-up kits. Protests were held in the chief minister's constituency of Ganderbal over his remark.
