New Delhi:
Uttar Pradesh Congress secretary Abdus Salam has told Delhi police that he inadvertently helped two Indian Mujahideen men after they escaped the Batla House encounter in New Delhi.
Abdus Salam is from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. A lot of young men from the district come to his residence in South Delhi asking for help.
As did 23-year-old Shahzad Ahmad, one of the 5 Indian Mujahideen men involved in Batla House encounter, in which police were involved in fierce a battle with terrorists for two hours.
Shahzad supposedly fired at the cops and escaped with co-accused Junaid. Both came to Abdus and asked for money to go to Azamgarh.
''They came to me on the day of the encounter. I did not know they were involved. It's my mistake. I should have informed the police that they had come to me for help, '' says Uttar Pradesh Congress secretary Abdus Salam.
Shahzad has told the police that not just Abdus, even Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi had given him Rs 8000 when on the run, he landed in Mumbai.
''I do not know any Shahzad. I don't think I helped him,'' says Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi.
Delhi Police have given a clean chit to both the politicians after questioning. The police say there is no evidence that Salem or Azmi knowingly helped terrorists.
