Congress president Sonia Gandhi today expressed her condolences on the passing away of General KV Krishna Rao.
Describing General Rao as "a decorated chief of army staff and a brave son of India who played an exemplary role during the 1971 Bangladesh War and always led by example", Ms Gandhi said his contributions as the governor in sensitive states like Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura could never be forgotten.
General Krishna Rao, the 14th chief of army staff, passed away on Saturday at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi. He was 92.
General Krishna Rao was commissioned in the Indian Army on August 9, 1942, at the height of World War-II and served in Burma (now Myanmar), the North West Frontier and Baluchistan during the conflict.
