Congress quits Telangana action committee

Hyderabad: The ruling Congress on Friday snapped its association with the all-party Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) and announced its decision to organise an agitation for separate statehood on its own.

"We are forming a Congress Action Committee. From today onwards, we would conduct our activities by appointing committees at village, district and state levels. We appeal to the party cadre to work as per the call of Congress," senior Congress MLA K Jana Reddy told reporters here.

He was speaking after a meeting of Congress MPs, MLAs, MLCs and other public representatives from Telangana region.

The Congress Action Committee would take the message into the people that Congress is sincerely working for realising the statehood goal and also for conveying the people's sentiment to Sri Krishna Committee appointed by the Centre.

Though the Congress has not formally announced its decision to come out of the JAC, it has been staying away from the JAC ever since the Centre formed the Sri Krishna Committee.

Only two Congress MLAs resigned as per JAC's decision, in protest against the terms of reference of the Sri Krishna Committee, and both of them were summoned by the party high command to Delhi for talks.
