Mumbai:
In what could be deemed as a soft launch for the Congress campaign ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra, Sonia Gandhi on Monday said that her party wanted to give power to the people.
The Congress president was speaking at a function to inaugurate the renovated office of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee which is located opposite the Brihan-Mumbai Municipal Corporation building.
Gandhi said the Maharashtra government has worked for poor farmers, introducing loan waivers to help those trapped in debt.
"Maharashtra has been part of the freedom struggle and social uplift," she said.
Gandhi said the Congress is not just a political party, it is a mass movement linked to Aam Admi. "The UPA has worked for the poor and common man. A reason why we were re-elected," she added.
At the inaugural, Defence Minister A K Antony who is in charge of the party's Maharashtra affairs and NCP chief and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar accompanied Gandhi.
Gandhi's Mumbai visit and her comments assume significance as talks are on between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to forge an alliance for the impending assembly polls in Maharashtra.
The Congress sources have, however, said that the party will not link alliance talks with Sonia's Maharashtra visit.
