Congress workers, police clash in Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar (Gujarat): A farmer rally by the Congress turned violent in Gandhinagar with the leaders clashing with the police. The cops had to resort to tear gas shells to control the mob.

Senior Congress leaders Shankersinh Vaghela and Arjun Modhvadia were detained. 200 other party activists were also detained by the police.

The Congress took out the rally to protest what they call the anti-farmer policies of the Narendra Modi government. When the rally reached the Secretariat, the protesters tried to break the security cordon. The police then tried to control the protesters and lobbed tear gas shells.

Some Congress leaders also got into scuffle with the policemen there.

The rally coincided with the opening day of the state Budget session, the police said. Congress was given permission to hold a public meeting at Pathik Ashram and not the rally. However, part workers led by Modhvadia defied the order and went ahead with the protest march, which was later joined by farmers, they added.
