Indore: A policeman allegedly committed suicide today at a police post in Indore as he was "under depression" for reportedly being denied of taking leave since a long time.
Assistant sub-inspector Santosh Shukla (55) locked himself inside the police post at Gulzar Colony, where he was posted, and hanged himself to death, City West Superintendent of Police, D Kalyan Chakravarty said.
Mr Shukla was alone at the post when he committed suicide as other policemen had gone out on patrolling in the morning.
Upon returning, his colleagues found Shukla hanging, the SP added.
According to sources close to the deceased, Mr Shukla was under stress after being denied leave since a long time.
When asked about the cop's reported depression and the reason behind it, Mr Chakravarty said, "Shukla has not left behind any suicide note at the spot and the reason behind him taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained. Further investigations are on."
Meanwhile, former state Director General of Police (DGP) SK Raut has said around 25 to 30 policemen commit suicide every year in the state, which is very unfortunate.
"Most of them take the extreme step due to work stress. Every policeman should be given a weekly off. But due to paucity of staff, they don't get leave," he added.
