The Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested a policeman who they say was running a militant group in Srinagar. With the arrest of two people, including constable Abdul Rashid Shigan, the J&K Police claim they have busted the militant module responsible for 13 attacks in Srinagar during the last 18 months.
"The raids were conducted in the residence of Abdul Rashid... based on his confession, he has admitted to taken part in more than 13 actions," said Inspector General of Police Kashmir S M Sahai.
Abdul Rashid Shigan, a constable of the armed police and posted with the security wing, was operating under the shadow name of Omar Mukhtar and General Usman. He was acting as spokesman for Kashmir Islamic Movement, a shadow outfit of Hizbul Mujahideen, and got its weapons from them, said the police.
Shigan has confessed to carrying out 13 attacks including the attack on the J&K law and rural development minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, killing several policemen and ruling National Conference workers, the police said.
A huge cache of arms and ammunition, including three AK rifles, 16 AK magazines, hundreds of rounds, four pistols, a grenade thrower, were also recovered from Shigan's home in Batmaloo.
