Cop's comments unacceptable, says Akhilesh, but no penalty yet

Cop's comments unacceptable, says Akhilesh, but no penalty yet
Lucknow: When the father of a missing teenager asked a policeman in Uttar Pradesh to help locate her, the cop shared what he would do under the same circumstances. "Kill her or commit suicide," said Satish Kumar Mathur, the top cop in Saharanpur, suggesting that if she had eloped, the girl had brought immeasurable shame to her family.

The missing girl has been found in Haridwar and is being escorted home.  It's not clear yet why she disappeared.

The police officer's remarks -filmed by journalists who were shooting an inspection of his police station - spawned national outrage, demands  for the officer's  dismissal by women's rights groups, and today, criticism from Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

"If that is the statement and if it has been shown on television then it is a very wrong statement because you expect justice from the police. He is at such a high position and if he does not understand importance of his position then action will be taken against him," Mr Yadav said.
