With a recovery rate of 92 per cent, more than 76 lakh coronavirus patients have been cured and discharged since the pandemic's outbreak in India in January.
Active Covid cases, or those being treated for the disease, has come down to 5.41 lakh. The country's positivity rate - or percentage of infections detected in tested samples - has dropped to 3.7 per cent even as its death rate remained the same as it was during the peak - 1.5 per cent.
There has been a consistent decline in coronavirus cases in India since its mid-September peak of almost 1 lakh cases a day to about 75,000 in October to a weekly average of 45,000 cases now.
However, experts have cautioned that dropping temperature and laxity in practicing Covid-safe behaviour - wearing masks and social distancing - could lead to a sharper spike in the winter months.
Kerala (4,138), Delhi (4,001) and West Bengal (3,957) have been experiencing a surge in their daily Covid cases for the past month, but their daily cases have also seen a decline. These states, plus Maharashtra (4,009) and Karnataka (2,576) accounted for 48.5 per cent of all cases in the country.
Maharashtra (104), Chhattisgarh (58), West Bengal (57), Delhi (42) and Tamil Nadu (31) accounted for almost 60 per cent of all deaths in the country.
As Maharashtra continues to be the state with highest Covid tally in India - 16.8 lakh - and a consistently high death rate, 244 free Covid testing centres were added to its worst-hit city, Mumbai.
India remains the second worst-hit country by coronavirus pandemic after the United States of America, which accounts for more than 92 lakh of the world's total 4.6 crore coronavirus cases; more than 2.3 lakh Americans have died fighting the viral disease.
