India Covid Tally At 76.5 Lakh With 54,044 Cases, 717 Deaths In A Day

India Covid-19 updates: Total active cases less than 10 per cent of tally - 76,51,107; "highest" overall recoveries in the world.

India recorded less than 50,000 new Covid cases in a day on Tuesday for the first time since July end.

New Delhi: With a jump of 54,044 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, India's coronavirus tally touched 76.5 lakh, government data shows. The country also recorded 717 deaths related to the viral disease in this period, taking the total number of deaths to 1,15,914 so far. India recorded less than 50,000 new Covid cases on Tuesday for the first time since July end. The country has been reporting a steady decline in its daily coronavirus infections after reaching a peak of about 90,000 cases a day in September. The daily recoveries have consistently remained higher than new infections since mid-September when Indias Covid infections peaked.

Here are the top 10 developments on coronavirus cases in India:

  1. India has a recovery rate of 88.8 per cent, daily positivity rate of 5 per cent - lower than yesterday's 6 per cent - and a steady death rate of 1.5 .per cent.

  2. With 61,775 people having fought off COVID-19 in last 24 hours, India's overall recoveries shot to 67.95 lakh - highest in the world - lowering the number of active cases to less than 10 per cent of total coronavirus cases - 76,51,107.

  3. Active case tally stood at 7,40,090 on Wednesday, less than 10 per cent of total cases, government data shows.

  4. Rise of coronavirus cases in some of country's worst-affected states till now have followed the national downward trend even though they continue to throw up big numbers.

  5. Maharashtra - which has more than 16 lakh cases - reported almost 8,000 cases today, followed by Kerala and Karnataka with almost 6,500 cases each, West Bengal and Delhi, accounting for 53 per cent of all new cases in the country. West Bengal's daily Covid cases have been increasing steadily since the start of October.

  6. Highest deaths were reported from Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu, accounting for 61 per cent of all Covid deaths.

  7. India tested 10.8 lakh samples in the last 24 hours, increasing its overall testing to 9.7 crore - second highest in the world after the United States.

  8. The Unites States remains the worst affected country by the coronavirus pandemic with more than 82 lakh cases, and is currently seeing a fresh spike in daily cases.

  9. Cautioning against any laxity in vigilance against coronavirus ahead of the festive season and winters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation, said all safety measures must be observed till a vaccine is found.

  10. India is working on two or three possible vaccines and "we are trying our best to get a vaccine, as is the rest of the world", PM Modi has said.
