New Delhi: India has overtaken Russia as the third worst-hit country by coronavirus after the total number of cases crossed 6.9 lakh on Sunday. The Union Health Ministry reported 24,248 cases and 425 deaths in the last 24 hours. The fresh cases and deaths have pushed the total cases in the country to 6,97,413 and the death count to 19,693. The sharp rise comes as Delhi started treating patients at a 10,000-bed COVID care centre. Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases, followed by Tamil, Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. The recovery rate stands at 60.85 per cent, with 4,24,433 patients across the country having recovering from the highly contagious disease.

  1. Maharashtra, the worst-hit state and home to financial hub Mumbai, recorded 6,555 new cases. The state crossed the grim milestone of two lakh COVID-19 cases - with 2,06,619 total cases - as the Maharashtra government plans more relaxations. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said a decision of the reopening of hotels and restaurants will be taken soon.

  2. Tamil Nadu's coronavirus tally reached 1,11,151. Malls are set to reopen fully across the state, except in Chennai, from today. IT and IT-enabled industries can reopen with 50 per cent staff, a maximum of 80 members and company transport. The companies, however, ought to ensure 20 per cent staff works from home. While Chennai's coronavirus count saw a slight dip over the last few days, Madurai is seeing a spike with 303 cases yesterday.

  3. With 2,244 new cases of COVID-19 in Delhi on Sunday, the total number of confirmed infections in the national capital stood just 556 away from the one lakh-mark. The total cases are now at 99,444, while active cases are at 25,038. While the recovery rate stands at 71.7 per cent, the death rate is 3 per cent.

  4. Amid a huge surge in coronavirus infections in Assam, the state's health department is relying on aggressive testing in the fight against the highly infectious illness. With two lakh rapid antigen test kits, the state has already stepped up testing across Guwahati. Assam has logged over 11,000 coronavirus cases so far, according to the government; 14 deaths linked to the illness have been recorded so far.

  5. Telangana on Sunday recorded 1,590 new COVID-19 cases and seven new deaths. The state's coronavirus count has touched 23,902, including 12,703 cured or discharged and 295 deaths.

  6. Karnataka, and capital Bengaluru in particular have seen a rapid spike in cases in the last few days. Bengaluru Urban remains the district with the highest number of cases. Bengaluru and other towns and cities of Karnataka observed a total shutdown on Sunday. The state has logged 23,474 coronavirus cases, including 372 deaths.

  7. Kerala on Sunday decided to impose a strict, "triple lockdown" in Thiruvananthapuram corporation limits for a week following a spike in coronavirus cases. The state government has said that safety rules for the coronavirus pandemic will have to be followed for the next one year in Kerala. The state, which had reported India's first coronavirus case in late January, has logged 5,429 infections to date.

  8. With 895 cases, West Bengal has reported the highest spike in new coronavirus cases in 24 hours. There have been 21 deaths in the last 24 hours. State capital Kolkata too peaked at 244 new cases. Bengal has recorded 22,126 infections so far.

  9. The nationwide lockdown in place since late March has gradually been lifted, allowing most activities. Schools, metro trains in cities, cinemas, gyms and swimming pools remain closed however and international flights are still grounded.

  10. The coronavirus pandemic has killed over 5.34 lakh people globally since it emerged in China late last year. Over 1.14 crore people have been infected with the highly contagious virus.
