Coronavirus cases in India inched towards the 50,000-mark as the country registered 49,391 cases, including 1,694 deaths, according to the latest figures from the Union Health Ministry. In the last 24 hours, 2,958 new cases and 126 deaths were reported. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the special task force created to meet the challenge posed by the highly contagious virus. The meeting was meant to discuss the progress in India's efforts in vaccine development, drug discovery, diagnosis and test. After the meet, a statement from the government said more than 30 vaccines for coronavirus are in different stages of development. A few of them are at the trial stage.

The number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra - the state with the highest number of COIVD-19 cases - rose to 15,525 with the state reporting 984 new cases on Tuesday. The number of deaths rose to 617.
Delhi has registered 5,104 cases so far, including 64 deaths.
In Tamil Nadu, 508 people tested positive in the last 24 hours, taking its total cases to more than 4,000. Authorities say most of people who tested positive in the last one day are linked to the Koyambedu vegetable and fruit market, one of the largest markets in the country. The market has emerged as the latest epicenter for COVID-19 cases in the state.
The country's recovery rate - number of patients who have successfully fought the illness - stood at 28.71 per cent this morning. A total of 14,183 patients have recovered so far.
Experts, however, said the peak of this deadly virus outbreak was yet to come and may be witnessed in India over the next 4-6 weeks, while another spurt might be seen later during the winter season.
Hundreds of people continue to queue up outside liquor shops after they re-opened for Monday.
