Coronavirus Cases In India In 24 Hours Cross 11,000-Mark

Maharashtra has the highest cases in India with 1,01,141, followed by Tamil Nadu with 40,698 and Delhi with 36,824. The state capital, Mumbai, the biggest contributor in the country's coronavirus tally, reported 1,366 new cases and 90 fresh deaths.

Tamil Nadu's tally has crossed 40,000 with 1,982 people testing  positive over the last 24 hours. Chennai continues to be the COVID-19 epicentre in the state with 71 per cent of the cases in Tamil Nadu being reported from the city. Six clusters in Chennai continue to be a challenge. On Friday, authorities filed a case against 40 people for violating quarantine rules by stepping out of their homes.

India's recovery rate - the number of patients who have successfully fought the viral illness - stood at 49.94 per cent this morning. 1,54,330 people have recovered, the Health Ministry has said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair an interaction with Chief Ministers of various states next week to discuss the coronavirus situation in India which has seen an alarming slide in recent days amid relaxations being rolled out following the two-month nationwide lockdown. The online meeting will be held on June 16 and 17.

In New Delhi, the situation is particularly dire with the Aam Aadmi Party government estimating that there will be 5.5 lakh cases by July 31. Delhi on Friday recorded its highest single-day spike with 2,137 new cases. This is the first time that new cases in the capital crossed the 2,000-mark in 24 hours.  The spike came on a day when Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain declared that the city will not be going into another lockdown.

Coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country, days after the centre announced a new period of the lockdown under its "Unlock1" plan, which has eased restrictions in phases by allowing flights to resume, shops to reopen and offices to function, among other measures, with following strict safety rules and social distancing practices.

The Supreme Court on Friday expressed concern over reports of doctors not being paid salaries and said the country "cannot have dissatisfied soldiers in this war that is being made against coronavirus." The court said the government needed to do more to address concerns of medical professionals. The Supreme Court was hearing a petition that called for doctors and others in the frontlines of the virus battle to be accommodated in hotels and guest houses for quarantine after seven to 14 days of duty.

The United States has recorded another 839 coronavirus-related fatalities in the last 24 hours, bringing the country's death count to 114,613, according to a tally Friday by Johns Hopkins University.

The coronavirus pandemic has killed 4,25,000 people globally since it emerged in China late last year, according to an AFP tally.

The economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic could plunge an extra 395 million people into extreme poverty and swell the total number of those living on less than Rs 130 a day worldwide to more than one billion, researchers said in a report on Friday, Reuters reported.
