Novel coronavirus cases in India rose to 283 on Saturday after 35 fresh cases were reported in various parts of the country, the Health Ministry said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a "janata (public) curfew" on Sunday; the curfew will be in force from 7 am to 9 pm.
The state governments have temporarily closed schools, colleges, shopping malls, cinemas, gyms and swimming pools to practice social distancing. This morning a 24-hour curfew was announced in Meghalaya's Shillong. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asked everyone to follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Janata Curfew" on March 22.
The coronavirus outbreak, which has killed over 8,000 people around the world and infected over 2.5 lakh others, is believed to have originated in China's Wuhan in December last year.
