Four states - Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Assam- on Friday recorded the highest single-day jump in the number of COVID-19 patients.
In Maharashtra, the worst-hit state, 116 deaths linked to COVID-19 were recorded in a day, taking the state's tally to 2,098. The total number of cases surpassed the 62,000-mark.
In Tamil Nadu, 874 new cases were reported, taking the infection count past the 20,000-mark.
Telangana recorded 169 new patients and four deaths on Friday, taking the state's tally to 2,425.
While Assam continues to grapple with floods, the number of coronavirus cases crossed the 1,000-mark on Friday with 177 new patients. The state's COVID-19 count has increased by four times in a week - from 256 cases on May 22 to 1,057 cases on Friday.
In a letter to the nation to mark the first anniversary of his second term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has referred to the resolve and resilience of 130 crore Indians amid the COVID-19 fight. "Due to the global pandemic this is certainly a time of crisis but for us Indians this is also a time for a firm resolve. We must always remember that the present and future of 130 crore will never be dictated by an adversity," he wrote.
PM Modi also pinned his hopes of economic turnaround on the strength of 130 crore Indians, and said they can surprise as well as inspire the world. "Many feared that India will become a problem for the world when Corona hits India. But today, through sheer confidence and resilience, you have transformed the way the world looks at us. You have proven that the collective strength and potential of Indians is unparalleled compared even to the powerful and prosperous countries of the world," he said.
At a time when India is battling a pandemic, the nation is also witnessing the worst locust invasion in three decades with several states on alert. On Friday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) warned that locust swarms pose a serious threat to flights while landing and taking off.
Worldwide, the COVID-19 count has crossed the six million-mark, over 3.6 lakh people have died.
The United States - the epicentre of the pandemic - recorded 1,225 coronavirus deaths on Friday, bringing its total to 102,798. The latest numbers came as President Donald Trump said he was severing US ties with the World Health Organization, accusing it of not doing enough to curb the initial spread of the novel coronavirus.
