India added 46,164 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours - a 22 per cent jump - while deaths from COVID-19 rose by 607. The country's overall case load now stands at 3.25 crore, while total fatalities are at 4.36 lakhs, according to the health ministry.
The daily positivity rate remains less than 3 per cent for the last 31 days and is presently at 2.58 per cent. Active cases constitute 1.03% of total cases, the lowest since March 2020, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate stands 97.63 per cent, the Union Health Ministry said.
Meanwhile, the number of Covid cases in Kerala jumped nearly 30 per cent over the past 24 hours to over 31,000 as the state government flagged an 'Onam spike'. The state recorded 215 deaths along with a test positivity rate of 19.03 per cent.
The state on Wednesday reported 31,445 fresh cases, pushing its total infection count to 38,83,429 and fatalities to 19,972.

COVID-19 transmission within homes is on the rise: Kerala health minister
Kerala Health Minister Veena George said on Thursday that the latest statistics show that the COVID-19 disease transmission within homes is increasing in the state.
According to the press release, a study conducted by the department of health showed that 35 per cent of cases were transmitted within homes.
"When a person in the house gets infected, it is transmitted to everyone in the house. This is because the home quarantine guidelines are not strictly followed. Only those who have required facilities at home can prefer home quarantine, others should shift to domiciliary covid care centers (DCC)," said Veena George in a press release.

Over 40 lakh Covid vaccine doses administered during two-day mega vaccination drive in Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh vaccinated more than 40 lakh people during its two-day mega vaccination campaign named Maha Abhiyan-2 on August 25 and 26.
On the first day of the mega COVID-19 vaccination drive in Madhya Pradesh, a total of 24,20,374 lakh vaccine doses were administered on Wednesday whereas, on the second day 16,49,751 people were administered, informs a release by the state government.
The release further stated that to effectively control the COVID-19 pandemic, the state government conducted the Vaccination Maha Abhiyan in which, the message of getting the vaccine from big cities to villages and small settlements was reached through various mediums and hence enabling people to get inspired and get the vaccination done.

Institutional quarantine must for coronavirus patients in Nagpur
In view of the rising number of Delta plus variant cases in Maharashtra, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Thursday made institutional quarantine or hospitalisation mandatory for every patient testing positive for coronavirus in the city.
Municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B has issued an order regarding this and directed all zone commissioners to put patients testing coronavirus positive under institutional quarantine or ensure their hospitalization, a NMC release said.
The release said though coronavirus cases are under control in Nagpur, threat of the Delta plus variant, considered highly infectious, persists in the city. "Patients testing coronavirus positive can be suspected patients of the Delta plus variant. Hence, this measure is being taken to stop its spread," the NMC said.

Centre to give more COVID-19 vaccines to help state meet vaccination target: Karnataka Chief Minister
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai on Thursday said that the Centre has agreed to increase the monthly supply of COVID-19 vaccines to the state.
Mr Bommai was briefing the media about his recent meeting with various union ministers in New Delhi.
"The Union minister has assured to supply more vaccines. This would help in our target of vaccinating 5 lakh people daily," said Mr Bommai.

15 Children At Mumbai Boarding School Test Positive For Covid
Twenty-two people from a boarding school and orphanage in Mumbai -- 15 of them children -- have tested positive for coronavirus. The St Joseph's School and Orphanage -- open through lockdowns for orphans and underprivileged children -- has been sealed by the city's civic body Brihanmumbai Corporation. Health Minister Rajesh Tope said their health is stable and they are receiving treatment.
Four of the students -- aged below 12 years -- have been shifted to the paediatric ward of the Nair Hospital.
Eleven teens have been shifted to the Covid care centre at the of Richardson and Cruddas campus. The seven adults have been admitted there as well.

Vilified by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party for its high COVID-19 cases, Kerala's apparent poor record may actually hold crucial lessons for the country in containing the outbreak as authorities brace for a possible third wave of infections.
The opposition-ruled, densely populated southern state is currently reporting the most number of coronavirus cases in the country and accounts for the second-highest national tally - unflattering headline numbers that PM Modi's BJP has seized upon as a reflection of bungled local leadership.
However, a Reuters analysis of national and state data, and interviews with epidemiologists and Kerala health authorities paint a different picture.
It shows the state's containment measures have helped to catch infections early, allowing authorities to better manage the illness and dramatically lower the death rate - a stark contrast to people dying in carparks and outside hospitals for lack of oxygen and beds in big cities like Delhi at the height of the health crisis a few months earlier.

Covishield 84-Day Dose Gap Being Reconsidered Again: Government Sources
The 84-day dose gap for Covishield is being reviewed for the third time this year and may be reduced, government sources said today.
"Reducing the gap between two doses of Covishield is being considered and it will be further discussed in NTAGI (National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation)," sources said.
The recommended dose gap for Serum Institute of India's Covishield, the Indian version of the Oxford-AstraZeneca shot, was four to six weeks when the nationwide vaccination started in January. This was later increased to six to eight weeks.

Coronavirus News: Ladakh Reports 15 New COVID-19 Cases, 6 Recoveries In A Day
Ladakh recorded 15 fresh COVID-19 cases in a day taking the tally of infections in the Union Territory so far to 20,515 while the number of active cases stands at 64, officials said on Thursday. No death from the viral disease was reported in Ladakh during the period. The Union Territory has registered 207 Covid-related deaths -- 149 in Leh and 58 in Kargil -- since the outbreak of the pandemic last year.

Coronavirus News: Mizoram's Covid-Positivity Rate Still Over 9%
Mizoram on Thursday reported 794 new COVID-19 cases and one more death, a Health Department official said. Among the new patients were 198 children, he said. The state has so far reported 54,851 cases and 202 deaths, the official said. The new cases were detected after testing 8,388 samples, recording a positivity rate of 9.47 per cent.

Japan will halt the use of 1.63 million doses of Moderna's Covid vaccine after reports of contamination in several lots, drugmaker Takeda and the health ministry said Thursday. Maharashtra: Thane Logs 193 New COVID-19 Cases, 8 More Deaths
Thane has added 193 new cases of coronavirus, raising the infection count in the Maharashtra district to 5,50,098, an official said on Thursday. Besides these new cases reported on Wednesday, eight more people also succumbed to the viral infection, which pushed the death count in the district to 11,264, he said. The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 2.04 per cent, he added.

Covid Updates: Focus Should Be On Vaccinating Everyone, Booster Can Wait: AIIMS Chief
India should now focus on vaccinating as many people as possible to curb the spread of Covid and the idea of booster doses can wait, AIIMS chief Randeep Guleria said. The AIIMS chief also said that Sero Survey suggested that there may not be as many coronavirus cases in a likely third Covid wave if vaccinations continue in strength. Coronavirus: Kerala's Covid Cases Up 30% In 24 hours As Government Flags 'Onam Spike'
The number of Covid cases in Kerala jumped nearly 30 per cent over the past 24 hours to over 31,000 as the state government flagged an 'Onam spike'. The state recorded 215 deaths along with a test positivity rate of 19.03 per cent. The state today reported 31,445 fresh cases, pushing its total infection count to 38,83,429 and fatalities to 19,972. Ernakulam district recorded the highest number with 4,048 cases, followed by Thrissur (3,865), Kozhikode (3,680), Malappuram (3,502), Palakkad (2,562), Kollam (2,479), Kottayam (2,050), Kannur (1,930) Alappuzha (1,874), Thiruvananthapuram (1,700), Idukki (1,166) Pathanamthitta (1,008) and Wayanad (962), a government release said.
