Coronavirus Cases in India: The recovery rate is 94.98 per cent.

New Delhi:

India's coronavirus case count rose to 98.84 lakh, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 93.88 lakh pushing the national recovery rate to 94.98 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday. 27,071 infections were reported in a day on Monday, while the death count rose to 1,43,335 with 336 new fatalities, the data showed.

The COVID-19 caseload of the country remained below 4 lakh for the eighth consecutive day on Monday.

A nurse in New York became the first person in the United States to receive the coronavirus vaccine Monday. Sandra Lindsay, a critical care nurse at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, received the shot live on television.

Meanwhile, Russian coronavirus vaccine developers published fresh results from their trial of the Sputnik V vaccine on Monday based on new data, and said the shot had again been found to be 91.4 per cent effective in providing protection from COVID-19.

The United States kicked off a mass vaccination drive Monday hoping to turn the tide on the world's biggest coronavirus outbreak, as the nation's death toll passed a staggering 300,000.

The start of the desperately awaited vaccine program coincided with several European countries announcing new lockdowns amid spiraling infections, highlighting how the road to ending the global pandemic is still long.

New York nurse Sandra Lindsay became the first person in America to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech shot, live on television, six days after Britain launched the West's vaccine campaign against Covid-19.

The vaccinations come at one of the darkest phases of the pandemic, with cases in the US and many other countries soaring, and health experts still struggling against vaccine skepticism, lockdown fatigue and uneven adherence to safety rules.

Canada announces new Covid-19 aid package for developing nations

Canada on Monday announced a Can$458 million ($380 million) aid package to help developing countries fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Of that amount, Can$230 million will go to the UN children's agency UNICEF to buy approximately three million treatments based on new therapeutic antibodies, once clinical trials are complete and approvals received, according to international development minister Karina Gould.

"The faster we can get tests, treatments and vaccines out to people, the sooner this pandemic can be contained," Gould said during a press conference.

Ottawa will also invest an additional Can$255 million to support the World Health Organization's plan to distribute vaccines and therapeutic products, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean, she said.

Turkey announces 4-day curfew over New Year's to combat COVID

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the introduction of a round-the-clock curfew in Turkey for the New Year holidays, from 9 pm on December 31 to 5 am on January 4.

"At today''s government meeting, it was decided to establish a curfew from 9 pm on December 31 to 5 am on January 4," President Erdogan said.

Earlier, he announced new restrictive measures due to the increase in the coronavirus incidence in the country. Bathhouses, saunas, swimming pools, gyms have suspended work since Tuesday, a certain number of visitors are allowed to shopping centers and only by digital code. The curfew is in effect from 9 pm to 5 am on weekdays, and from 9 am Friday to 5 am on Monday.

South Africa battles second COVID-19 wave, beaches shut down, strict enforcement in place

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the closure of some of the country's most popular holiday beaches and increased enforcement of regulations as part of heightened restrictions to combat the worsening second wave of coronavirus infections.

"Given the rate at which new cases have grown over the last two weeks, there is every possibility that if we do not act urgently and if we do not act together, the second wave will be more severe than the first wave," Ramaphosa said in a televised broadcast Monday evening.

COVID-19 infections in South Africa have doubled to 8,000 daily in the past 10 days, which the President said is "a cause for great concern."

"The daily average of COVID-19 deaths has increased by nearly 50 percent over the same period, from just over 100 deaths a day to just over 150 deaths.

COVID-19 positive Hry minister Anil Vij's vital parameters normal; undergoing plasma therapy: Doctors

The vital parameters of COVID-19 positive Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij are normal and he is undergoing convalescent plasma therapy, a medical bulletin issued by the PGIMS hospital in Rohtak said on Monday. 

Mr Vij was examined on Monday by a special medical board comprising a team of senior doctors of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), constituted by the institute''s director Rohtas Yadav. "Anil Vij was cheerful... and his vital parameters were normal," said the bulletin. 

However, the minister has fever, it said. The treatment being given to him was thoroughly reviewed by the doctors, it said.

Myanmar's COVID-19 cases increase to 109,512, deaths reach 2,292

The number of COVID-19 cases in Myanmar has increased to 109,512 with 1,170 new cases reported in the country on Monday, according to a release from the Ministry of Health and Sports.

The deaths reached 2,292 with 24 more deaths reported on Monday.

Myanmar is trying to get COVID-19 vaccine for 40 per cent of its people in 2021, Soe Lwin Nyein, chairman of National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) told Xinhua on Monday.

Coronavirus Updates: Delhi records 1,376 new COVID-19 cases, with 60 new fatalities

Delhi recorded 1,376 fresh COVID-19 cases on Monday which pushed the infection tally to 6.08 lakh, while the death count crossed the 10,000 mark with 60 new fatalities.

These fresh cases came out of 63,944 tests conducted the last day, including 36,176 Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Delhi health department on December 14.

The tally of active cases on Monday mounted to 15,247. The number of total recoveries reached 5,83,509 and number of total cases in the national capital reached 6,08,830.

Coronavirus Latest News: Single-Day Recoveries Surpass Fresh COVID-19 Cases In West Bengal

Single-day COVID-19 recoveries outnumbered fresh cases in West Bengal on Monday, even as 43 more patients died due to the virus, pushing the death count to 9,100, PTI reported quoting the health department.

The discharge rate improved to 94.18 per cent with 2,980 people recovering from the disease since Sunday, while the state's coronavirus tally climbed to 5,23,629 with 1,834 new cases, it said.

COVID-19 Pandemic Has Worsened India's Growth Slowdown: Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee

In a conversation with NDTV, Economist and Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee said that the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened India's growth, which was already slowing down before the pandemic.

"We already knew we were in a growth slowdown. Covid has made it worse, but we have not been doing well for some years," Mr Banerjee said.

Talking about the availability of vaccines in India, he said that rich countries are buying all the vaccines globally.

"Then there is a question that vaccines developed are not suited for India. If the Oxford vaccine works, it will be good for India. Other developing countries will be doing worse," he said.

New York on Monday inoculated its first healthcare worker, an intensive care unit nurse in Queens, with the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, marking a pivotal turn in the US effort to control the deadly virus, Reuters reported.

Sandra Lindsay, an ICU nurse, was given the vaccine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens, New York, an early epicenter of the country's COVID-19 outbreak, receiving applause on a livestream with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo."It didn't feel any different from taking any other vaccine," she said.

Conducting Large Scale Testing Via RT-PCR In The National Capital: Delhi Government To High Court

The Delhi government on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that it is conducting large scale testing via RT-PCR in the national capital, ANI reported. Directions were issued to all Market Trade Association visitors for strict compliance of Standard of Procedure on preventive measures in markets to contain spread of COVID-19, it further said.
