Coronavirus Highlights: Delhi Cases Cross 40,000; Centre Says Testing To Be Tripled In National Capital

Coronavirus: A total of 9,195 COVID-19 patients have died so far, according to the government. This is the second consecutive day that India has recorded more than 11,000 new infections in one day.

India Coronavirus Cases: The number of COVID-19 cases in India has been rising.

Delhi logged 2,224 new coronavirus cases and 56 deaths in the last 24 hours, government data said, taking the total number of cases in the city to 41,182 and deaths to 1,327.

This is the highest single-day spike in numbers and is also the third consecutive 24-hour period in which over 2,000 new cases have been detected.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today said Delhi will be given 500 railway coaches to address the shortage of beds for coronavirus patients and will also recieve central help to increase testing after a meeting with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. He also said that number of tests will be tripled its current number in the next 6 days.

India's coronavirus tally rose to 3,20,922 cases today as it recorded the single-day biggest jump of 11,929 new infections in the last 24 hours and 311 deaths, the Union Health Ministry said this morning. A total of 9,195 COVID-19 patients have died so far, according to the government. This is the second consecutive day that India has recorded more than 11,000 new infections in one day.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with ministers and officials to review the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government said in a statement. They discussed the situation in the states and Union Territories, including Delhi, where coronavirus cases have been rising.

Facing surge in cases in 5 districts, Telangana to undertake 50,000 COVID-19 tests
The Telangana government on Sunday said it will conduct COVID-19 tests on 50,000 people in 30 assembly segments in the state capital and four adjoining districts which are witnessing a spike in new cases in a bid to contain the spread.

Chairing a high-level review meeting on COVID-19, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao instructed officials to conduct the tests in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Vikarabad, Medchal and Sangareddy districts over the next ten days, an official release said.

Maharashtra COVID-19 cases spike by 3,390 to 1,07,958; death count 3,950
Maharashtra on Sunday reported 3,390 new COVID-19 cases and 120 deaths, including 69 in Mumbai, taking the overall case count to 1,07,958 and the number of fatalities to 3,950, a Health official said.

However, the actual number of people under treatment in the state is 53,017, he said.

A total of 1,632 patients were discharged from hospitals in the day, taking the number of the recovered cases to 50,978.

10 coronavirus patients die in Rajasthan, death count rises to 292
Ten coronavirus affected patients died on Sunday taking the death count to 292 in the state while 293 fresh cases were reported, officials said.

The case count in the state has gone up to 12,694, the officials said.

Six deaths were reported from Jaipur, two from Bharatpur and one each from Pali and Sriganganagar, they added.

Gujarat's COVID-19 cases mount to 23,590; death count 1,478 now
The coronavirus case count in Gujarat grew to 23,590 on Sunday after 511 more patients were found in the state, the state health department said.

As the virus claimed 29 more lives across the state, the death count due to the pandemic reached 1,478, it said.

There are 5,779 active cases in the state, of which 66 patients are in a critical condition, the department said.

As many as 442 patients were discharged on Sunday after recovery, taking the number of such people to 16,333.

Delhi: Anand Vihar Railway To Have Space For Isolation Coaches For COVID-19 Patients
The Railways will not run any trains from Anand Vihar station from Monday and all the platforms will be used to deploy isolation coaches for coronavirus patients that the Centre will provide to the Delhi government to overcome the shortage of hospital beds.

Coronavirus news: 77 COVID-19 cases reported in Punjab today
A total of 77 more COVID-19 cases were reported in Punjab on Sunday, taking the total number of cases to 3,140, the state health department said.

According to the official data, the total number of cases includes 2,356 recovered, 717 active cases and 67 deaths.

Coronavirus news: Pune Cops Develop Quarantine Monitoring App For Externed Criminals
Police in Pune in Maharashtra have developed a customised and modified version of a home quarantine monitoring mechanism to track criminals who have been externed, an official said on Sunday.

The Externees Monitoring and Tracking System Application, also called Extra, has been modified from the Home Quarantine Tracking System that is being used amid the outbreak to ensure those advised isolation are following it, reported news agency PTI.

"Extra is a facial recognition and geo location-based tracking system operationalised on an experimental basis for externed criminals," he said.

Ahmedabad: 334 new COVID-19 cases take tally to 16,640
As 334 new coronavirus positive cases were reported on Sunday, the number of patients in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat rose to 16,640, the state health department said.

The virus claimed 22 more lives in the district during the day, which took the count of victims to 1,187, it said.

Of the total 511 new cases reported across the state on Sunday, Ahmedabad alone reported 334.
The district also recorded 22 of the 29 deaths in the state, it said.

Coronavirus: Railways deploys 204 isolation coaches in 4 states to boost COVID capacity
The Railways has deployed 204 isolation coaches in four states, including 54 at Delhi's Shakurbasti railway station maintenance depot, officials said, adding that the number in the capital will be scaled up to 500 in the coming days.

Home Minister Amit Shah earlier Sunday had said the Centre would provide 500 such coaches to Delhi to overcome the shortage of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients.

States like Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi requisitioned these coaches two months after the national transporter converted over 5,000 of its non-air conditioned coaches into COVID care centres.

Coronavirus news: 112 more test positive for COVID-19 in Ladakh
The Union Territory of Ladakh recorded 112 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of those infected with the disease to 549, officials said on Sunday.

However, 80 of the patients have already been cured and subsequently discharged from hospitals, while one person had died of the disease, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying.

The officials said a total of 112 new positive cases were reported, including 104 from Kargil district and eight from Leh district.

"The number of active cases in Ladakh stands at 468 -- 404 in Kargil and 64 in Leh. The condition of all of them is stable," an official of the health department said.

Coronavirus news: 70 new COVID-19 cases in UP's Noida; tally crosses 900
Seventy people, including 18 healthcare workers, tested positive for COVID-19 in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar on Sunday, taking the tally in the district to 935, officials said.

Also, 16 patients were discharged after recovery from the virus, even as the number of active cases rose to 410 in the district, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying.

Gautam Buddh Nagar, adjoining Delhi, has recorded 12 deaths linked to COVID-19, according to official figures.

"On Sunday, 70 people were found positive for COVID-19 and total positive cases till date stand at 935. Also 16 patients were discharged, while a total 510 patients have recovered so far. There are 413 active cases now," District Surveillance Officer Sunil Dohare said.

Coronavirus news: 9 new COVID-19 cases in Manipur; tally rises to 458
A total of nine cases of COVID-19 were reported in Manipur on Sunday, taking the total number of cases to 458 in the state.

"Nine cases of COVID-19 recorded in Manipur today, taking the total number of cases to 458 out of which 367 cases are active," Manipur government said.

Coronavirus news: 6 more COVID-19 cases in Himachal Pradesh
With six more COVID-19 cases reported in Himachal Pradesh, the tally for coronavirus has reached 514 in the state on Sunday, said the state Health Department.

Of 1,217 people tested in the state, 247 resulted negative while 964 test results are still awaited, reported news agency ANI.

The total count includes 187 active cases, 309 recovered cases and six deaths so far.

According to the Union Health Ministry, India has reported 3,20,922 coronavirus cases in the country as of June 14.

COVID-19: Amit Shah directs immediate transfer of 4 IAS officers to assist Delhi Government
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday directed immediate transfer of four IAS officers -- two from Andaman and Nicobar and two from Arunachal Pradesh to New Delhi to assist Delhi Government in the management of COVID-19, said Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

"Home Minister Amit Shah directed immediate transfer of four IAS officers -- Awanish Kumar and Monica Priyadarshini from Andaman and Nicobar, and Gaurav Singh Rajawat and Vikram Singh Mallik from Arunachal Pradesh to New Delhi to assist Delhi Government in the management of COVID-19," said the MHA.

Besides, Mr Shah also directed two senior IAS officers from Centre -- SCL Das and SS Yadav to assist Delhi government.

Coronavirus news: 40 hotels, 80 banquet halls to be converted to COVID-19 facilities in Delhi
The Delhi government has directed district magistrates and other officials concerned to set up nearly 20,000 more beds within a week in the wake of a spurt in COVID-19 cases in the national capital, an official said.

According to the official, around 40 hotels and 80 banquet halls will be converted into health facilities to provide medical care to coronavirus-infected people, reported news agency PTI.

The COVID-19 tally has reached nearly 39,000 in Delhi and the virus has claimed more than 1,200 lives so far in the capital.

Earlier this week, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that Delhi would need 1.5 lakh beds by July 31 if people from other states start coming to the national capital for treatment.

Following the government's order, the northwest district administration has issued an order to convert 22 banquet halls into health facilities where around 3,300 beds will be set up by the authorities.

Coronavirus news: 499 new COVID-19 cases in UP, active tally at 4,948
A total of 499 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of active cases to 4,948, said Amit Mohan Prasad, Principal Health Secretary, on Sunday.

Mr Prasad said that the state's recovery rate is over 60 per cent and 8,268 patients have recovered from the disease so far.

"499 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of active cases to 4,948. A total of 8,268 people (60.72 per cent) have recovered while 399 others lost their lives due to the disease," Mr Prasad said while addressing a press conference.

Mr Prasad said that a total of 15,762 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the state on Saturday, reported news agency ANI.

COVID-19: Roads, markets in Punjab wear deserted look amid weekend restrictions
Roads and markets in most parts of Punjab wore a deserted look on Sunday with the state government imposing stricter lockdown restrictions on weekends.

Police personnel were deployed in adequate numbers across the state for implementing the lockdown strictly, officials said.

Inter-district movement was barred except for people with e-passes, they said, adding that no pass was required for such travel in case of a medical emergency.

All shops dealing with non-essential items stayed shut in the state, though chemist shops and departmental stores remained open.

In Ludhiana, there was no rush of people at Chaura bazaar, which is one of the busiest markets.

"E-pass is a must if anybody is on the road," a policeman in Ludhiana said.
