China Coronavirus Updates: 100-Day Olympic Countdown In Beijing Amid Boycott Calls As Covid Weighs
Olympics Organisers have given no details about how they plan to mark the 100 days and any festivities look like they are set to be small, with Chinese authorities rushing to stamp out a Covid outbreak in their pursuit of a zero-cases policy.

This weekend's Beijing Marathon has been postponed and China on Monday reported 39 new domestic infections, while urging people to avoid unnecessary travel outside the capital.

China, where the coronavirus emerged towards the end of 2019, has wrestled infections down with mass testing, aggressive lockdowns and by largely sealing its borders.

The 2022 Winter Olympic Games, which take place just six months after the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Summer Olympics, will be held in a strict "closed loop" bubble to thwart infections.

The estimated 2,900 athletes must be fully vaccinated or face 21 days' quarantine upon arrival in the Chinese capital.

A few days ago, health authorities in the United Kingdom classified a new mutation of the Delta variant of COVID-19 as a Variant Under Investigation (VUI). The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) made this classification after the Delta sub-lineage AY.4.2 showed an increased growth rate in the UK in recent months.

According to the UKSHA, "There is some early evidence that it may have an increased growth rate in the UK compared to Delta". However, the agency added that "more evidence is needed to know whether this is due to changes in the virus' behaviour or to epidemiological conditions".

Find out all about this descendant of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2.
