Delhi reported 331 positive cases, one death, and 144 recoveries in the last 24 hours. The number of active cases in the city is 1,289 with total positive cases 14,43,683. Delhi has recorded the most cases of Omicron in the country (142), followed by Maharashtra (141), Kerala (57), Gujarat (49) and 43 (Rajasthan), the Health Ministry said in a bulletin.
The national capital has activated the graded action plan prepared earlier this year to tackle surges in infections. From 11 pm today, night curfew will remain in place in the national capital.
The decision to bring back night curfew was taken after Delhi reported 290 cases yesterday. If the spike continues, a yellow alert will follow.
Meanwhile, India reported 6,531 new coronavirus cases and 315 deaths on Monday, according to the health ministry. This pushed the total active cases to 75,841 and the death count to 4,79,997. The number of Omicron cases has risen to 578 in the country and at least 151 have recovered, the health ministry said today.
Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh on Sunday reported their first cases of the Omicron variant. Delhi- which also has reported the most number of coronavirus cases - has 142 cases of the new variant. It is followed by Maharashtra, which has 141 cases. Kerala has 57 cases and Gujarat 49.
In view of the fast-spreading Omicron variant, India on Saturday announced booster shots for health and frontline workers and those above 60 from January 10. In a late night address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced vaccinations for children between 15 and 18 years from January 3.

US health authorities on Monday halved the recommended isolation time for people with asymptomatic Covid-19 infections from 10 to five days, with a surge of cases causing travel chaos and threatening wider social disruption, reported news agency AFP.

The French government will soon order companies to impose at least three work-from-home days for employees in a bid to stem a fifth wave of Covid infections, Prime Minister Jean Castex said Monday, according to news agency AFP. The new measure, in place for at least three weeks, is one of several announced after President Emmanuel Macron held a crisis cabinet meeting on the new Omicron variant, but the government held off on postponing a return to class for students after the holidays, or a New Year's Eve curfew.

COVID-19: Punjab sees 46 fresh cases
Punjab on Monday reported 46 fresh cases of the coronavirus, which took the infection tally to 6,04,279, according to a medical bulletin.
One Covid-related fatality was reported in Ludhiana district. With this, the toll reached 16,640 and it included a death case which was not reported earlier, it said.
Among the fresh cases, Pathankot reported 14 cases, followed by nine in Jalandhar and seven in Patiala.
The number of active cases rose to 392 from 378 on Sunday, the bulletin said.
Twenty-seven more people recovered from the infection, taking the number of those who have been cured to 5,87,247, it said.
The Union Territory Chandigarh reported seven COVID-19 cases, taking the total count to 65,781.

West Bengal logs 439 new COVID-19 cases, 10 fresh fatalities
West Bengal's COVID-19 tally rose to 16,31,065 on Monday as 439 more people tested positive for the infection, while 10 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus deaths to 19,726, a health bulletin said.
Kolkata reported the highest number of 204 new cases, while Hooghly and North 24 Parganas districts registered the maximum of three fresh fatalities each, it said.
The state now has 7,433 active cases, while 16,03,906 people have been cured of the disease so far, including 446 on Monday, the bulletin said, adding that the recovery rate stood at 98.33 per cent.

Over 4,400 people fined for Covid norm violations in Delhi on Sunday
Amid a rising number of coronavirus cases in Delhi, authorities have intensified vigilance activities and over 4,425 people were fined for violating norms such as wearing masks and maintaining social distancing on Sunday.
According to data provided by the city government on Monday, enforcement teams slapped fine totalling Rs 88.72 lakh for such violations on Sunday and FIRs were registered against 38 people.
As many as 4,342 challans were issued for not wearing masks, while 68 people were fined for not following social distancing norms and 15 were penalised for spitting in public places.
The highest number of 692 challans were issued in North district, followed by 606 in East, the data showed. According to the data, the lowest number of 144 challans were issued in Central district.
Till December 18, the authorities had fined over 68,000 people for violating Covid norms.
Delhi recorded 331 fresh coronavirus cases on Monday, the highest single-day rise in the city's COVID-19 tally since June 9, and one more death due to the viral disease, while the positivity rate mounted to 0.68 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department.

Karnataka to conduct vaccination drives in schools to innoculate age group of 15-18 yrs
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday informed that the state is preparing to inoculate 15 to 18-year-old from January 3 by organising vaccination drives at schools.
"We are preparing to inoculate 15-18-year-olds from January 3 by organising vaccination drives at schools. Primary Health Care (PHCs) asked to be prepared for administering 'precautionary dose' to those above 60 years of age with co-morbidities from Jan 10, 2022", CM Bommai told reporters.
Chief M Basavaraj Bommai also issued a compensation cheque of Rs 1,00,000 to the families of Below Poverty Level (BPL) people who lost their lives to COVID-19 in the limits of Bangalore urban district and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits.
Karnataka CM had informed earlier that the state is prepared to tackle the possible third wave of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, due to a rise in Omicron cases, the Karnataka government has decided to impose a night curfew from December 28 from 10 pm to 5 am for ten days.

Maharashtra reports 26 new cases of Omicron
Maharashtra on Monday reported 26 new cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, taking the state tally of those infected with the new strain to 167, the health department said.
As many as 11 of the new cases of Omicron, marked as a 'variant of concern' by the WHO, were detected in Mumbai.
"Twenty-six new cases of the Omicron variant have been reported from Maharashtra today," the health department said in a bulletin.
Giving the break-up of 26, the bulletin said Mumbai reported 11 cases, Raigad (Panvel Municipal Corporation) - five, Thane Municipal Corporation - four, Nanded - two. Nagpur, Palghar, Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (in Thane district) and Pune rural reported one case each.

Tamil Nadu seeks Centre's nod to announce Omicron confirmed cases
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday requested the Centre to grant the state permission, as a special case, to announce Omicron confirmed cases rather than wait for reports from the National Institute of Virology, owing to its expertise in whole genome sequencing.
Reiterating the demand for necessary approvals, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian claimed that by the time the NIV confirmed the samples, those testing positive in the state get discharged after treatment.
"Practically, by the time the samples get confirmed, those who test positive get treated and are discharged from the hospital," he said while talking to reporters here. Hence, the Centre should grant permission to Tamil Nadu, as a special case, to enable it provide daily updates on the Omicron cases, he argued.
Elaborating, Subramanian said of the 97 persons recently detected with S-gene drop in Tamil Nadu, the NIV confirmed the presence of Omicron variant in 34, of whom 18 have already been discharged while 16 are undergoing treatment. Normally, results of the samples sent to the NIV for confirmation are received in about 10 days.
"And by this time the positive patients get treated and discharged," the Minister said.

COVID-19: Night curfew imposed in Uttarakhand
Night curfew was imposed across Uttarakhand on Monday in view of the threat posed by the highly transmissible Omicron variant of COVID-19.
The night curfew which comes into effect on Monday night will remain in force from 11 pm to 5 am till further orders, said an order issued by Chief Secretary SS Sandhu.
However, essential services like health, movement of vehicles carrying health personnel, ambulances, postal services have been exempted from the ambit of the curfew.
Production, transportation and distribution of petrol, diesel, kerosene and LPG will also be exempt from the curb.
Private vehicles too will have the permission to commute for emergencies during the curfew with strict adherence to Covid SOPs and safety protocols.

Tanzania returnee first Omicron patient in Manipur
A 48-year-old returnee from Tanzania on Monday tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Manipur, making him the first patient of the strain in the northeastern state, the Directorate of Health Services said. The resident of Imphal West district recently returned from the African country via Delhi, it said.
The man tested positive for COVID-19 on the eighth day of his return to India, and his sample, which was sent to the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development in Imphal for whole-genome sequencing, was found to be infected with the Omicron strain, the directorate said.
The patient has been placed under isolation at state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences here, and he has not exhibited any severe symptoms, it said, adding that his temperature, respiratory and pulse rates are being constantly monitored.

Samples of 164 contacts of 9 Omicron infected people sent for tests in Madhya Pradesh
The Indore health department in Madhya Pradesh has sent for tests samples of 164 people, who came in contact with nine people found infected with the new Omicron variant of COVID-19, an official said on Monday.
Out of these 164 people, if anyone tests positive for coronavirus, then that person's sample will be sent to the National Centre for Disease Control for genome sequencing to ascertain if the person is infected with the Omicron variant, Indore's Chief Medical and Health Officer BS Saitya said.
Of the nine people found infected with Omicron here after return from abroad, seven have recovered and gone back home from hospital, he said.
"The other two patients are admitted in different hospitals here and their health condition is stable," the official said.

Night curfew in the interest of public health: Karnataka Chief Minister
As Omicron cases continue to rise across the country, Karnataka has imposed a night curfew in the state. "Night curfew has been imposed in the state in the interest of public health," Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said while speaking to media persons on Monday.
He said, "Solatium is being paid to BPL families of those who lost their lives due to COVID-19 in all districts and taluks. A programme in this regard is being held in Bengaluru as well."
Reacting to displeasure among the business community against the night curfew he said, "the measure has been taken in the interest of public health. People would have to strictly follow COVID-19 norms at tourist spots."
On December 2, Karnataka reported the country's first Omicron case in Bengaluru.

Goa Reports 1st Omicron Case; Minor Traveller From UK Found Infected
An eight-year-old boy, who arrived in Goa from the United Kingdom, has been found infected with Omicron, making it the first case of the new coronavirus variant in the coastal state.
State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane told PTI on Monday that the boy, who travelled from the UK on December 17, 2021, was confirmed to be infected with Omicron, as per his test report received from the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
Mr Rane said the state government will take steps according to the central government's protocol and also adopt stringent measures as required.

13 Pune College Students Test Positive For Covid
At least 13 students of an engineering college in Pune city of Maharashtra have tested positive for coronavirus, an official from the institution said on Monday.
All these students, currently in the third year of the engineering course, are "largely asymptomatic" and isolated at home, said Prashant Dave, registrar of the MIT World Peace University, to which the institution is affiliated.
"As we follow strict measures, we screen our students at the main gate (of the institution). During the screening, one student was found to be having runny nose and he was immediately sent back and his parents were asked to get his RT-PCR test done," the official said.
After the student's test report came out positive for the coronavirus, his close contacts were traced, he said.

Night curfew in Delhi from Monday over rising Covid cases
Night curfew will be imposed in Delhi from 11 pm on Monday, restricting movement of individuals except those in exempted categories, due to rising COVID-19 cases and the threat posed by Omicron, according to a DDMA order.
The night curfew will be in place from 11 pm to 5 am till further orders, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) said.
Those exempted from the curfew include government officials, judges and judicial officers, medical personnel, pregnant women and patients, people going on feet to buy essential items, media persons, and people going to or returning from railway stations, bus stops and airports.
Only exempted-category people will be allowed in Metro trains and public transport buses during the night curfew hours, the DDMA order stated.

Coronavirus Updates: Arunachal Pradesh reports single COVID-19 case
Arunachal Pradesh recorded one new COVID-19 case on Monday, pushing the tally to 55,332, a senior health department official said here.
The frontier state now has 16 active COVID-19 cases.
As many as 55,036 people have recuperated from the disease so far, the official said.
The COVID-19 death toll remained at 280 as no fresh fatality was reported in the last 24 hours, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.
The coronavirus recovery rate in the state now is 99.46 per cent, while the activity ratio is 0.03 per cent.

Most Omicron Cases In Delhi (142), Big Jump; Night Curfew From Today
Amid fears of the new Omicron variant driving a third wave of Covid infections, the country today reported 578 cases of the new strain over the past 24 hours - a hike of 37 per cent from yesterday's tally of 422.
Overall, the country reported 6,531 Covid cases over the past 24 hours, 6.5 per cent less as compared to yesterday.
Delhi has recorded the most cases of the new strain in the country (142), followed by Maharashtra (141), Kerala (57), Gujarat (49) and 43 (Rajasthan). Out of the 578 Omicron cases recorded in the country so far, 151 patients have recovered or migrated, the Health Ministry said in its bulletin.
The country's active Covid caseload currently stands at 75,841. Active cases account for less than 1 per cent of total cases, currently at 0.22 per cent, lowest since March 2020. The recovery rate currently stands at 98.40 per cent.

Telangana reports 3 new Omicron cases, state tally reaches to 44
Telangana reported three new Omicron cases on Sunday, according to the state health department.
With this, the total number of Omicron cases in the state rose to 44 of which 10 patients have recovered completely and were discharged from the state-run TIMS hospital.
A total of 248 passengers arrived from "At-risk" countries at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Two samples tested positive for COVID-19. Both of the samples were sent for genome sequencing.
Two samples of the passengers travelling from countries other than "At risk" countries were tested positive on a random sampling basis for the Omicron variant.
