Covid-19 Cases India: The active cases now comprise 5.23 per cent of the total infections.

New Delhi:

India added nearly 3.50 lakh new Covid cases today, a nine percent jump from yesterday's 3.17 lakh cases which was also the highest in eight months. With a tally of 3.91 crore cases, India is the second worst-hit country after the US.

The active cases now comprise 5.23 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.50 per cent. The daily positivity rate is up from 16.41% to 17.94% while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 16.56 per cent.

COVID-19 India News: Punjab Reports 7,792 New Cases, 28 Deaths
Twenty-eight more people died due to COVID-19 in Punjab on Friday while 7,792 fresh coronavirus cases took the infection tally to 7,00,222, according to a medical bulletin. So far, 16,913 people have died from the infection in the state. The number of active cases was 48,183 while the state's positivity rate stood at 17.95 per cent. A total of 6,882 people recovered from the infection, taking the number of those who have recovered to 6,35,126, the bulletin said.

COVID-19 News: Study Finds Non-Neutralising Antibodies Might Protect Against Covid
A new study has found that non-neutralising antibodies may also be important in providing protection against COVID-19. The study has been published in the 'Frontiers in Immunology Journal'.

"Our results indicate that non-neutralising antibodies could also provide protection. This would mean that we have broader protection from antibodies than previously thought, making us less vulnerable to mutations of the virus. It warrants further investigation," said Pontus Nordenfelt who led the study and is a researcher at Lund University.

COVID-19 India News: Assam Bans Cultural Functions, School Celebrations On R-Day
The Assam government has banned all cultural programmes, award functions and participation of school children in the ensuing Republic Day celebrations in the state in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Issuing an order, Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua said the Republic Day programme will be limited to National Flag hoisting, speech by the guest of honour and ceremonial parade only.

COVID-19 India News: Maharashtra Reports 48,270 New Cases, 52 More Deaths
48,270 new coronavirus cases were reported in Maharashtra today, the highest so far during the Omicron variant-driven third wave. Besides, 52 COVID-19 deaths were also reported in the state today. Yesterday, the state had reported 46,197 cases and 37 deaths. Moreover, 144 patients with Omicron variant have also been reported in the state today. The Omicron count in Maharashtra now stands at 2,343.

COVID-19 India News: Chhattisgarh Reports 5,029 New Cases, 8 More Deaths
Chhattisgarh's COVID-19 count reached 10,86,207 on Friday with the addition of 5,029 cases, while eight deaths took the count to 13,705, an official said. The state's positivity rate, which is cases detected per 100 tests, was 10.67 per cent on Friday, he said. The number of recoveries reached 10,41,746 after 193 people were discharged from hospitals and 5,808 completed home isolation during the day, leaving the state with an active tally of 30,756, he said.

COVID-19 India News: Gujarat Reports 21,225 New Cases, 16 More Deaths
Gujarat reported 21,225 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, a drop from its all-time high recorded a day ago, taking the tally to 10,22,788, while 16 more patients succumbed to the infection, the state health department said. The tally was lower than the all-time high of 24,485 cases reported on Thursday but still the second highest spike since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020. A total of 16 COVID-19 patients died during the day, increasing the tally of fatalities to 10,215, said the department in a release. The state's tally of active cases rose further to 1,16,843 after crossing the 1-lakh mark a day ago.

COVID-19 India News: Assam Reports 6,897 New Cases, 15 More Deaths
Assam reported 6,897 new COVID cases and 15 deaths on Friday. According to the Chief Minister's Office, out of the total new cases, 1,561 cases were reported from the Kamrup district. With 56,849 samples tested in the last 24 hours, the positivity rate in Assam remained 12.13 per cent on Friday. The recovery rate from the disease has been at 92.31 per cent in the state.

COVID-19 India News: 4,416 New Cases, 2 More Deaths In Telangana
Telangana on Friday reported 4,416 new COVID-19 cases and pushed the tally to 7,26,819 while two fatalities took the death count to 4,069. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most cases with 1,670 followed by the districts of Medchal Malkajgiri (417) and Ranga Reddy (301), said a bulletin providing details as of 5.30 PM today. It said 1,920 people recovered from the infection during the day. The cumulative number of recoveries till date was 6,93,623. The number of active cases was 29,127, the bulletin said.

COVID-19 India News: Night Curfew In 17 More Gujarat Towns With High Positivity Rate
In light of the surge in COVID-19 cases, the Gujarat government has announced night curfew for 17 more towns with high positivity rate and extended the implementation in eight metros and two cities till January 29. While the timing of the night curfew remains unchanged from 10 pm to 6 am, 17 more towns have been added to the list of places where it will be enforced from January 22 till January 29, a government release stated. At the same time, the government has relaxed home delivery services for hotels and restaurants to 24 hours, while permitting these establishments to operate with 75 per cent capacity till 10 pm, it was stated.

COVID-19 India News: Mumbai Reports 5,008 New Cases, 12 More Deaths
Mumbai on Friday reported 5,008 new coronavirus cases, 700 less than the previous day, and 12 fresh fatalities linked to the infection, the city civic body said. With this, the city's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,28,715, while the death count jumped to 16,512, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bulletin said. This was the third day in a row when daily COVID-19 cases have dropped in the financial capital.

COVID-19 India News: Bengal Reports 9,154 New Cases, 35 More Deaths
West Bengal's COVID-19 tally rose to 19,49,074 on Friday as 9,154 people tested positive for the infection, 1,805 less than the previous day, a health bulletin said. The death count rose to 20,265 as 35 more patients succumbed to the infection, it said. The number of active cases dipped by 9,993 to 1,34,816, the bulletin said.

COVID-19 India News: 29,870 New Cases In Tamil Nadu, 7,038 From Chennai Alone
Tamil Nadu today reported 29,870 new positive cases of coronavirus as against yesterday's 28,561 cases, a rise of around 4.5 per cent. The positivity rate is 20.3 per cent. Besides, 33 virus-related deaths and 21,684 recoveries were also reported. Of the new cases, Chennai accounted for 7,038 new infections as against yesterday's 7,520 cases. Coimbatore reported 3,653 new cases, Kanyakumari 1,248, Salem 1,009, Thiruvallur 1,016 and Virudhunagar 629. Currently, there are 1,87,358 cases cases in the state.

COVID-19 News: 16,878 New Cases In Rajasthan, Biggest Single-Day Jump In 8 Months
Rajasthan on Friday recorded 16,878 fresh COVID-19 cases, the sharpest single-day rise in eight months, and 15 deaths due to the viral disease, according to a health department bulletin. While Jaipur reported 4,035 fresh cases, Jodhpur logged 2,222, Alwar 1,371, Bharatpur 898, Udaipur 857, Chittorgarh 682, Ajmer 657, Kota 594 and Pali 504, the bulletin stated. Of the latest deaths, three were reported from Jaipur, two each from Ajmer and Bikaner, and one each from Barmer, Bharatpur, Dausa, Nagaur, Pali, Rajsamand, Sikar and Tonk, it said. So far, 9,059 people have succumbed to COVID-19 in Rajasthan. According to the bulletin, 84,787 COVID-19 patients are undergoing treatment in the state. As many as 10,175 more people have recovered from the viral disease.

COVID-19 News: Isolation Facility Not Must For Arrivals From 'At-Risk' Countries: Centre
The health ministry has issued new guidelines for international arrivals under which isolation facility is not mandatory for people arriving from 'at-risk' countries from Saturday. The guidelines further stated, "If tested negative they (international travellers) will follow home quarantine for seven days and shall undertake RTPCR test on the 8th day of arrival in India."

COVID-19 India News: Delhi Reports 10,756 New Cases, 38 Deaths In Last 24 Hours
Delhi reported a slump in new coronavirus cases as well as positivity rates in the last 24 hours, with the city recording 10,756 new virus cases during this period. The positivity rate was 18.04 per cent. During this period, 38 virus-related deaths were also reported. There are now 61,954 active cases in the city. The death count has now risen to 25,541.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday tested positive for COVID-19, a day after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Delhi. Mr Sangma urged everyone who has come in contact with him to isolate themselves and get tested if necessary. "I have tested positive for COVID-19. I am isolating myself for the required time. I have mild symptoms. All those who came into contact with me last few days are requested to observe their symptoms and test if necessary," he tweeted.

COVID-19 India News: Kerala Reports 41,668 New Cases, 106 More Deaths
Kerala today reported 41,668 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the total number of cases to 55,29,566, a day after registering 46,387 cases, the highest single day spike since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. The health department said the state tested 95,218 samples in the last 24 hours and there are 2,23,548 active COVID-19 cases. However, in a relief to the state's health sector, only 3% are admitted to the hospitals. Kerala on Friday reported 106 deaths, taking the death count to 51,607.

COVID-19 India News: 6 Members Can Now Register Using One Number On Co-WIN
The government vaccination registration platform Co-WIN now allows six members to register using one mobile number. Earlier, it allowed only four members to register using the same number.
