Coronavirus Highlights: India Reports 2.35 Lakh New Cases, Positivity Rate Drops To 13.39%

Coronavirus Highlights: The country also recorded 627 new deaths, taking the total number of Covid-related fatalities to 4,92,327.

India's daily Covid curve showed marginal improvement today as the country reported 2.35 lakh cases, which is around 6 per cent lower than yesterday. As many as 871 people have died of Covid during the past 24-hour period, according to the Health Ministry.

The active now comprises 4.91 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.89 per cent. 400 districts have logged over 10 per cent positivity rate in the week ending January 26.

The covid vaccination coverage across India has crossed 164.04 crore doses. Ninety five per cent of India's eligible adult population has been administered the first dose of Covid vaccine while 74 per cent are fully inoculated.

The World Health Organisation on Friday said that the NeoCov coronavirus, discovered by Chinese scientists, requires further study.

A team of Wuhan researchers found a new kind of coronavirus, NeoCov, among bats in South Africa. In a study, the researchers said that the virus may pose a threat to humans in the future.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Maharashtra's 3rd Covid Wave Seems To Be Declining, Says Health Minister
The "third wave" of the coronavirus pandemic seems to be declining in the state though in some cities cases are showing an uptick, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Saturday.

The state reported 27,971 new coronavirus cases and 61 deaths during the day.

With the count of new daily cases dropping from the peak of 47,000 to about 25,000, "it seems the COVID-19 third wave has come down," Mr Tope told reporters in Mumbai.

COVID-19 India News: Assam Reports 2,294 New Cases, 22 More Deaths
Maintaining a declining trend, Assam reported 2,294 new COVID-19 cases today, pushing the tally to 7,13,685, according to the bulletin issued by the National Health Mission (NHM). The state had registered 2,861 new cases on January 28, 3,677 less than the previous day.

Altogether 22 people died due to coronavirus today, taking the death count to 6,422, while 1,347 COVID patients have died due to other causes. The current death rate in the state is 0.90 per cent with Kamrup Metro district reporting five deaths and Sivasagar three. The number of active cases currently is 28,788, the bulletin said. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Uttar Pradesh Reports 8,338 New Cases, 25 More Deaths
Uttar Pradesh today reported 25 Covid deaths and 8,338 fresh COVID cases, an official statement said. With the latest addition, the till date death count rose to 23,164 in the state. Active cases in UP stood at 59,601, while the overall tally of infection rose to 20,05,245, it said.Lucknow recorded a maximum of 1,705 fresh cases. A total of 13,910 COVID patients have recuperated from the viral infection, taking the total number of recoveries to 19,22,480 in the state, the statement said. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Nagaland Reports 87 New Cases, 2 More Deaths
Nagaland today logged 87 new COVID-19 cases, 43 less than the previous day's count, with the tally rising to 34,276, said a health department official. The death count increased to 715 as two more patients in Dimapur district succumbed to the disease. At least 65 people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cured people to 31,258. Nagaland now has 907 active cases, the official said. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Bihar Reports 1,302 New Cases, 6 More Deaths
Bihar today reported 1,302 new Covid-19 cases, 352 less than the previous day, taking the tally to 8,21,814, a health department bulletin said. It said that the death count increased to 12,217, as six more deaths due to coronavirus were reported during the day. The state now has 7712 active cases. Of the 1,302 new cases in the state, 228 fresh infections were reported from Patna. On Friday, the state capital had logged 221 fresh cases. A total of 80,1885 people recuperated from the disease so far, including 2,577 in the last 24 hours. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Third Wave Seems To Be Waning, Says Maharashtra Minister
The "third wave" of the coronavirus pandemic seems to be declining in the state though in some cities cases are showing an uptick, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope said on Saturday. COVID-19 India News: Rajasthan Reports 10,437 New Cases, 22 Deaths
Rajasthan on Saturday reported 10,437 fresh COVID-19 cases and 22 deaths due to the infection. Of the new cases, a maximum of 2,408 cases were reported from Jaipur, followed by 999 in Jodhpur, 746 in Alwar, 572 in Kota and 567 in Udaipur. Rests of the cases were reported from other districts of the state. A total of 1,18,999 people have tested positive for coronavirus. Of them, 9,224 people have so far died and 11,05,918 recovered. The number of active cases in the state is 74,849. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Maharashtra's Pune District Reports 9,769 New Cases, 17 Deaths
Pune district in Maharashtra today recorded 9,769 new coronavirus positive cases, taking the tally to 13,98,456. With 17 fatalities, the district's death toll mounted to 19,446, an official said. He said 5,410 infections were reported in Pune city, 2,645 in Pimpri Chinchwad and 1,375 in Pune rural and 96 in the cantonment limits. As of Saturday, the Pune district has 2,513 patients admitted in institutional isolation and 66,998 people in home isolation, the official added. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Gujarat Sees 11,974 New Cases, 33 Deaths
For the first time in nearly the last two weeks, Gujarat today reported less than 12,000 new COVID-19 cases while 33 patients died, the highest during the third wave, the health department said. With 11,974 new cases, the tally of infections mounted to 11,44,585 in the state and the death count to 10,408. At 8, Ahmedabad district reported the highest number of new COVID-19 fatalities. It also reported the highest number of 4,066 cases during the day. Gujarat's tally of active cases fell below one lakh to 98,021, the department said. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Haryana Reports 4,445 New Cases, 1,338 In Gurgaon
Thirteen more Covid-related deaths were reported in Haryana on Saturday as 4,445 fresh cases surfaced, pushing the state's infection count to 9,42,051, according to a health department bulletin. So far, 10,269 people have died from the infection in the state. The worst-hit Gurgaon district reported 1,338 fresh cases while Faridabad, Sonipat and Panchkula reported 475, 274 and 242 cases, respectively. There are 30,197 active Covid cases in the state. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Tamil Nadu Reports 24,418 New Cases, 4,508 From Chennai
Tamil Nadu on Saturday added 24,418 to the list of infections and they included four infected returnees from overseas. This pushed the tally to 33,03,702 till date as the State continued to report a decline in new Covid-19 cases. As many as 46 people died due to the contagion in the last 24 hours taking the death count to 37,506 till date, said the Health Department. Recoveries eclipsed new cases with 27,885 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, a bulletin said. Chennai witnessed 4,508 infected cases followed by Coimbatore 3,309. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Madhya Pradesh Reports 8,678 New Cases, 5 More Deaths
The COVID-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh stood at 9,50,134 on Saturday after the detection of 8,678 cases, while the deaths of five patients in the last 24 hours took the death count to 10,607, a health department official said. The positivity rate increased to 11.74 percent on Saturday from 10.8 percent the previous day, he pointed out. The recovery count stood at 8,73,485 after 10,576 people were discharged from hospitals during the day, leaving the state with an active tally of 66,042, said the official. Bhopal and Indore reported 1,508 and 1,905 cases, respectively, during the past 24 hours, he said. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Karnataka Reports 33,337 New Cases, Half Of It From Bengaluru
The COVID-19 related deaths in Karnataka increased from 50 on Friday to 70 on Saturday while there were 33,337 fresh COVID-19 infections taking the caseload and fatalities to 37,57,031 and 38,874 respectively, the health department said. In its bulletin, the department said 69,902 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 34,65,995. Active cases stood at 2,52,132. Bengaluru urban district was a major contributor of the fresh COVID-19 cases, registering 16,586 infections and 13 deaths. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: India's Vaccine Coverage Crosses 165.6 Crore, Says Centre
India's COVID-19 vaccination coverage has crossed 165.6 crore with more than 53 lakh vaccine doses administered on Saturday, the Union health ministry said. The daily vaccination tally is expected to increase with the compilation of the final reports for the day by late tonight, the ministry said. Cumulatively, 53,96,51,188 first doses have been given to those in the 18-44 age group and 40,19,58,479 second doses have been given in the same age group since the start of phase-3 of vaccination drive, according to health ministry data. In 15-18 age group, 4,55,48,237 doses have been administered. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Himachal Pradesh Reports 1,714 New Cases, 8 More Deaths
Himachal Pradesh reported 1,714 fresh COVID-19 cases on Saturday, besides eight related deaths, a daily health bulletin said. The fresh cases took the overall case tally to 2,69,291, while death count rose to 3,969, it said. Among the dead, six were men and two women, all of them between the age of 40 and 85 years. Shimla reported 492 fresh cases, the highest among all districts. "The number of active COVID-19 cases in the state decreased to 9,453 today from 9,752 on Friday," the official said. A total of 2,005 patients recovered from the infection in last one day, increasing the overall recoveries to 2,55,848. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Bengal Reports 3,512 New Cases, 35 More Deaths
West Bengal's COVID-19 tally rose to 19,90,179 on Saturday as 3,512 people tested positive for the infection, 293 less than the previous day, a health bulletin said. Thirty-five more patients died due to the infection, pushing the state's coronavirus death count to 20,550, it said. The state had registered 3,805 cases and 34 fatalities on Friday. Of the 3,512 new cases, 459 were reported in Kolkata. The number of active cases dipped by 7,811 to 37,918, while 19,31,711 people recovered from the disease so far, including 11,288 in the last 24 hours. (PTI)

COVID-19 India News: Schools, Colleges To Reopen In Telangana From February 1
In view of decreasing COVID-19 cases, the Telangana government has announced the reopening of educational institutions in the state from February 1. "All education institutions will be reopened from February 1 in Telangana," said State Education Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy. The Minister said COVID-19 guidelines should be strictly followed in all the educational institutions and directed school authorities to take appropriate precautions. Schools and educational institutions in Telangana were closed from January 8, 2022. (ANI)

COVID-19 India News: Cases Reducing, But Need To Be Vigilant: Health Minister To Eastern States
There is still a need to be vigilant and not lower the guard even though the active cases of COVID-19 in most of the states and the positivity rate have shown a fall in the last two weeks, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in an interaction with five eastern states on Saturday. State health ministers, principal secretaries/ additional chief secretaries and information commissioners of Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal participated in the meeting, according to an official release. COVID-19 India News: Mumbai Reports 1,411 New Cases, 11 More Deaths
Mumbai today reported 1,411 new COVID-19 cases and 11 fatalities due to the coronavirus infection, taking the tally to 10,44,470 and the death count to 16,602, the city civic body said. With 3,547 patients being discharged, the total number of recoveries in Mumbai rose to 10,12,921, leaving the metropolis with 12,187 active cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
