Coronavirus Highlights: India Reports 1,946 New Covid Cases In 24 Hours

Tamil Nadu on Wednesday reported 244 new COVID-19 cases while the active caseload in the state fell to 3,865 with 405 people recovering from the disease, the health department said Wednesday.

With the new cases, the infection tally reached 35,89,781 while the death count stayed at 38,048 with no more fatalities reported, it said.

So far, 35,47,868 people have recuperated from the viral disease.

Six districts logged the majority of the new cases with Chennai leading with 61 infections while the remaining districts reported new infections below 10.

The state capital leads among districts with 2,006 active infections and overall 7,92,066 coronavirus cases.

A total of 10,666 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of tests so far to 6,96,59,031, the bulletin said.

Chhattisgarh on Wednesday reported 49 new COVID-19 cases at a positivity rate of 1.18 per cent, taking the cumulative tally to 11,77,270, while no fresh death linked to the infection was reported in the state, an official said.

The death count remain unchanged at 14,139.

The recovery count rose to 11,62,761 after 60 people recovered during the day, leaving the state with 370 active cases, he said.

Raipur led with 14 cases, followed by 10 in Durg, among other districts. No coronavirus cases were reported in 12 of the 28 districts, the official said.

With 4,161 swab samples examined during the day, the tally of tests carried out so far in the state went up to 1,87,11,648, he added.

The COVID-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh rose to 10,54,606 on Wednesday after the detection of 15 new cases at a positivity rate of 0.4 per cent, while no fresh death linked to the infection was reported in the state, a health department official said.

The death count remained unchanged at 10,775.

The recovery count increased by 14 to touch 10,43,718, leaving the state with 113active cases, he said.

With 3,568 swab samples examined during the day, the number of coronavirus tests conducted in MP so far went up to 3,01,07,328, the official added.

A government release said 13,33,76,662 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far in the state, including 1,06,912 on Wednesday.

Delhi recorded 107 fresh Covid cases with a positivity rate of 1.64 per cent on Wednesday, according to data shared by the health department here.

No Covid-related fatality was reported in the city.

With these new cases, the capital's infection tally has climbed to 20,05,211 while the death toll stands at 26,506, the department said in the latest bulletin.

The new cases were detected from 6,535 tests conducted on Tuesday, it stated.

On Tuesday, Delhi had logged 141 new COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 2.04 per cent, while the capital had recorded 61 new infections with a positivity rate of 3.61 per cent.

The number of active Covid cases in Delhi now stands at 488, the bulletin stated, adding that a total of 339 patients are under home-isolation.

Of the 8,819 beds reserved for Covid patients in various city hospitals, 54 are occupied, it said. There are 48 containment zones in Delhi.

Gujarat on Wednesday reported 62 fresh COVID-19 cases, raising the overall tally to 12,76,244, while no new death linked to the infection was recorded in the state, the health department said.

With 93 patients recovering from the respiratory illness in the last 24 hours, the number of recuperated cases rose to 12,64,619, it said in a release.

The state now has 587 active cases, of which two patients are on ventilator support, said the department.

The number of COVID-19 fatalities remained unchanged at 11,038 with no new addition to the toll, said the release.

District-wise, Ahmedabad reported 18 fresh cases, Surat 13, Rajkot eight, Vadodara six, Mehsana five and Morbi three, among others, it said.

In terms of vaccination, 26,554 people received their shots on Wednesday, raising the number of doses administered so far in the state to 12.74 crore, according to the release.

Mumbai on Wednesday reported 141 new coronavirus cases and zero fatalities, the city civic body said.

With the addition of fresh cases, the COVID-19 tally in the metropolis has gone up to 11,52,845. The overall death count stood at 19,738, as per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) bulletin.

Of the 141 cases, only 12 patients were symptomatic while the rest 129 were asymptomatic.

A day earlier, the city had logged 128 infections.

With 194 people discharged from hospitals, Mumbai's tally of recoveries rose to 11,32,038, leaving the metropolis with 1,069 active cases, the bulletin said.

A total of 6,108 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, taking the number of samples tested so far in Mumbai to 1,84,07,449.

The recovery rate stood at 98.2 per cent.

The overall growth rate of COVID-19 cases in the city was 0.015 per cent between October 12 and October 18, while the doubling rate of COVID-19 cases is 4,805 days.

Telangana on Wednesday recorded 79 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total tally to 8,39,329.

Hyderabad district reported the highest number of cases with 46.

A COVID-19 bulletin said 83 people recuperated from the infection raising the cumulative number of recoveries till date to 8,34,668.

The recovery rate stood at 99.44 per cent.

No fresh fatality occurred due to the infectious disease and the death count continued to be 4,111.

The bulletin said 8,508 samples were tested today. The number of active cases was 550, it said.

Maharashtra on Wednesday recorded 418 fresh coronavirus positive cases and three fatalities, which raised the overall infection tally to 81,28,676 and death count to 1,48,377, a health department said.

The state saw 60 more cases as compared to Tuesday, when there were 358 cases and two fatalities.

Mumbai recorded 141 new cases. Pune city, Pune district and Sindhudurg district recorded one death each. The state's fatality rate stood at 1.82 per cent.

There are now 2,688 active cases in Maharashtra, it said, adding that 515 patients have recuperated from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative recovery figure to 79,77,611. The recovery rate in the state stands at 98.14 per cent.

As 17,623 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, the cumulative test count rose to 8,51,11,673.

At least 18 cases of XBB sub-variant of Omicron have been reported in Maharashtra in the first fortnight of October, the state health department said on Wednesday.

A health official said 13 of these cases are from Pune, two each from Nagpur and Thane and one from Akola district.

"As per INSACOG labs' latest report, 18 cases of XBB variant have been reported in the state in the first fortnight of October month," he said.

Apart from these cases, Pune has also reported one case each of BQ.1 and BA.2.3.20 sub-variants. These cases are from the period of September 24 to October 11.

As per the primary information, all these cases are mild.

Odisha's COVID-19 tally rose to 13,35,635 on Wednesday as 73 more people, including eight children, tested positive for the infection, the health department said in a bulletin.

The death count remained unchanged at 9,202 with no new fatalities reported since Monday.

Fifty-three other coronavirus patients have died due to comorbidities so far, the bulletin said.

Odisha has 507 active COVID-19 cases, while 13,25,873 people have recovered from the disease.

At least five new sub-variants of the Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected in different states over the past few days. Maharashtra's Thane district reported 61 new COVID-19 cases, raising its infection count to 7,46,059, a health official said on Wednesday.

With the addition of the latest numbers on Tuesday, there are currently 525 active COVID-19 cases in Thane, which is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, he said.

No fatality was reported on Tuesday and the death count stood at 11,962.
