Coronavirus India Highlights: Delhi Positivity Rate Down To 6.3% From 7.4%, 3,674 New Cases

India's daily Covid curve showed marginal improvement as the country reported 2.34 lakh cases today.

The active cases now comprise 4.59 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 94.21 per cent.

The daily positivity rate was up from 13.39 per cent to 14.50 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 16.40 per cent. The cumulative doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive has exceeded 165.70 crore, the ministry said.

A type of coronavirus, NeoCov, that spreads among bats in South Africa may pose a threat to humans in future if it mutates further, according to a study by Chinese researchers.

The yet-to-be peer-reviewed study recently posted on the preprint repository BioRxiv, shows that NeoCov is closely related to the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), a viral disease first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Researchers from Chinese Academy of Sciences and Wuhan University noted that NeoCov is found in a population of bats in South Africa and to date spreads exclusively among these animals.

Meanwhile, India's daily Covid curve showed marginal improvement on Saturday as the country reported 2.35 lakh cases, which is around 6 per cent lower than Friday. As many as 871 people have died of Covid during the past 24-hour period, according to the Health Ministry.

The active now comprises 4.91 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.89 per cent.

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday discussed preparations for the Budget session of Parliament amid the surge in coronavirus cases.

The session begins Monday with the address of President Ram Nath Kovind to members of both the Houses.

During the meet, Om Birla suggested that members of both the Houses can be seated at different locations by name to avoid confusion, crowding and inquiries. Mr Naidu accepted the suggestion, parliamentary sources said.

Delhi reports 3,674 fresh Covid cases, 30 deaths
Delhi on Sunday logged 3,674 fresh COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 6.37 per cent, while 30 more people succumbed to the viral disease, according to data shared by the city health department.

With this, the national capital's caseload increased to 18,27,489 and the death toll climbed to 25,827, the bulletin stated.

A total of 57,686 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the city a day ago, it said.

The number of daily cases in Delhi has been on the decline after touching the record high of 28,867 on January 13. The city had recorded a positivity rate of 30.6 per cent on January 14, the highest during the ongoing wave of the pandemic.

1238 fresh Covid cases, four deaths in Bihar
Bihar on Sunday recorded 1,238 fresh coronavirus cases and four more deaths taking the count in the disease to 12,221, according to the bulletin issued by the state health department.

The fresh cases pushed up the caseload to 8,23,052, it said.

The state's overall active coronavirus count jumped to 6,557 on Wednesday, while the cumulative recoveries stood at 8,04,274, the bulletin said.

The four deaths were reported from Nalanda, Patna and East Champaran. "All those who died in the past 24 hours were already suffering from several serious complications. When their samples were tested, they were found to be COVID-19 positive," a senior official of the state health department said.

The state had reported 1,302 fresh cases on Saturday. Patna alone reported 158 fresh infections on Sunday, 70 less than the previous day. The number of active cases in the city now stands at 398, the bulletin said.

Gujarat sees 9,395 COVID-19 cases, tally rises to 11,53,980; 30 die
Gujarat on Sunday reported 9,395 COVID-19 cases, which raised the tally to 11,53,980, while 30 deaths took the toll to 10,438, an official said.

The discharge of 16,066 people from hospitals increased the recovery count to 10,52,222, leaving the state with an active tally of 91,230, he said.

The state reported less that 10,000 cases in a day for the first time in nearly two weeks, while the deaths were slightly less than the 33 witnessed on Saturday, he pointed out.

Ahmedabad led with 3,653 new cases, followed by Vadodara with 2,011, Rajkot 773 and Surat with 642, among other districts, he said.

Pune district sees 7,617 new COVID-19 cases, 15 fatalities
Pune district in Maharashtra on Sunday reported 7,617 fresh coronavirus positive cases and 15 fatalities, which raised the tally of infections to 14,06,073 and the count to 19,461, an official said.

He said 3,896 cases were reported from Pune city, 2,133 in Pimpri Chinchwad, 1,155 in Pune rural and 147 in cantonment limits.

As of Sunday, the Pune district has 2,270 people admitted in institutional quarantine and 61,139 are in home isolation, the official added.

COVID-19: Tamil Nadu adds 22,238 fresh infections, 38 deaths
Tamil Nadu on Sunday added 22,238 infections, including a returnee from the United Arab Emirates, pushing the tally to 33,25,940 while 38 more fatalities took the death count to 37,544, the Health department said.

Recoveries outnumbered new cases with 26,624 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 30,84,470 leaving 2,03,926 active infections, a medical bulletin said.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern stayed in self-isolation on Sunday, as the country recorded 103 new COVID-19 infections and its tough border controls were highlighted by a pregnant journalist who said she was trapped in Afghanistan.

Ardern, in self-isolation until Tuesday, took a coronavirus test on Sunday after being exposed to an infected person. Results were expected later on Sunday or on Monday, her office said.

Maharashtra's 3rd Covid Wave Seems To Be Declining, Says Health Minister
The "third wave" of the coronavirus pandemic seems to be declining in the state though in some cities cases are showing an uptick, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Saturday.

The state reported 27,971 new coronavirus cases and 61 deaths during the day.

With the count of new daily cases dropping from the peak of 47,000 to about 25,000, "it seems the COVID-19 third wave has come down," Mr Tope told reporters in Mumbai.
