Coronavirus Cases India: India's overall coronavirus case count stands at 91.77 lakh

With 37,975 fresh COVID-19 infections, India recorded 13 per cent fewer coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, government data shows. The country also reported 480 Covid-related deaths in this period, marginally lower than yesterday's 511. India's overall coronavirus case count now stands at 91.77 lakh, with 1,34,218 Covid-related fatalities, so far. 

Active cases rose to almost 4.4 lakh as more than 40,000 people successfully fought off the virus taking overall recoveries to 86,04,955. The country's overall recovery rate is 93.75 per cent, with a daily positivity rate of about 3.5 per cent against 10.9 lakh tests in the last 24 hours.

Delhi on Monday recorded 4,454 fresh COVID-19 cases and 121 people died in the national capital in the last 24 hours. These relatively low number of fresh cases came out of the 37,307 tests conducted on Sunday, including 18,046 RT-PCR tests, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Delhi health department. 

Amid a surge in the number of coronavirus cases in the city, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has ordered for an immediate procurement of 1,200 BiPAP machines for the new ICU beds being added in the national capital this week, an official said on Tuesday. He said the move will allow immediate operationalisation of the new ICU beds. A total of 1,200 BiPAP machines will be procured immediately from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the official said.

Coronavirus news: Bengal registers 49 more COVID-19 deaths, 3,545 fresh cases

The COVID-19 death count in West Bengal rose to 8,121 on Tuesday after 49 people died due to the disease, the health department said in a bulletin.

The tally mounted to 4,63,463 after 3,545 new cases of infection were reported from different parts of the state, it said.

Altogether 3,646 patients also recovered from the disease, taking the total number of cured people to 4,30,462.

The discharge rate is 92.88 per cent at present.

The number of active cases now is 24,880, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: National Institute of Biologicals to function as additional facility for testing of COVID-19 vaccines

Noida-based National Institute of Biologicals (NIB), an apex autonomous institute under the Union health ministry, shall function as an additional facility for testing of COVID-19 vaccines, according to a gazette notification issued on Tuesday.

At present, all types of vaccines are being tested for lot release purposes at the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL), Kasauli.

Coronavirus news: 1,033 people without mask penalised, says Noida Police
As many as 1,033 people who were found without face masks at public places were issued challans across Noida and Greater Noida amid the COVID-19 outbreak, police said on Tuesday.

Police Commissioner Alok Singh has directed officials to issue challans to those who are found not adhering to COVID-19 protocols in public places, according to a statement.

According to it, Rs 1,03,800 were collected from the violators in fines on Tuesday, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: Assam reports 157 new COVID-19 cases, tally rises to 2,11,839

Assam's COVID-19 caseload rose to 2,11,839 with 157 more people testing positive for the infection on Tuesday, while one more fatality pushed the death count to 976, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The lone death in the state was that of a 52-year old in Tinsukia. The death rate remained constant at 0.46 per cent, PTI reported.

Health Workers First In Line For Vaccine: Karnataka Home Minister
Karnataka is ready with a plan to administer the coronavirus vaccine whenever the central government gets an approval, state Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Tuesday.

"We told the Prime Minister's Office that Karnataka has good manufacturing and health infrastructure... Guard against laxity in COVID-19 fight: Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Chief Ministers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday cautioned states and union territories against any laxity in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and called for reducing the positivity and fatality rates by focusing on curbing the virus transmission.

Interacting with chief ministers, the prime minister also called for more RT-PCR tests, even as he underlined that India's COVID-19 situation is more stable than other countries in terms of recovery and fatality rates.

PM Modi asked them to work towards bringing the positive rate to less than 5 per cent and the fatality rate to under 1 per cent and called for more RT-PCR tests.

"We need to speed up our efforts to reduce transmission of the virus. Testing, confirmation, contact tracing and data must be given top priority," he said.

COVID-19 situation under control in Gujarat: Chief Minister tells PM Modi

The COVID-19 situation in Gujarat is under control and enough number of beds are available for patients, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said on Tuesday during his virtual interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr Rupani also informed about various initiatives to curb the coronavirus transmission during a meeting of chief ministers of eight states, which have reported higher number of COVID-19 cases, addressed by PM Modi via video conferencing, an official release said.

The Chief Minister said the government has intensified testing to identify coronavirus positive patients and also imposed a night curfew in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara and Surat.

COVID-19: Madhya Pradesh government extends parole of 4,000 prisoners by 60 days

The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to extend the parole of about 4,000 prisoners for another 60 days in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra said on Tuesday.

Madhya Pradesh reported 1,798 and 1,701 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday and Monday, respectively, taking the total caseload in the state to 1,94,745.

"About 4,000 prisoners are currently out of jails on parole in the state. The government has decided to extend the parole of such prisoners for another 60 days in view of COVID-19 cases", Mr Mishra, who also holds Jail portfolio, told reporters.

Coronavirus News: South Korea reports 349 more COVID-19 cases, 31,353 in total

South Korea reported 349 more cases of COVID-19 as of early Tuesday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 31,353.

The daily caseload rose above 300 after recording 271 in the previous day. It grew in triple digits for 17 days running due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.

Of the new cases, 132 were Seoul residents and 69 were people residing in Gyeonggi province.

Coronavirus Live updates: Odisha records 642 new COVID-19 cases, 14 more deaths

Odisha's COVID-19 caseload on Tuesday mounted to 3,15,271 after 642 more people tested positive for the infection, while 14 fresh fatalities took the death's to 1,671, a health department official said.

Of the 642 new cases, 374 were reported from various quarantine centres, and the remaining detected during contact tracing, the official said.

Keonjhar recorded the maximum number of new cases at 70, followed by Nuapada at 69 and Sundargarh at 66.

Taking to Twitter, the health department said, "Regret to inform the demise of fourteen #COVID19 positive patients while under treatment in hospitals.

Pollution played key role in high severity of third wave of COVID-19 in Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal to PM Modi

At a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said the high severity of the third wave of COVID-19 in the national capital is due to many factors, pollution being an important one, sources said.

Mr Kejriwal told the prime minister that Delhi saw the peak of 8,600 coronavirus cases on November 10 during the third wave and since then, the number of cases as well as the positivity rate are steadily decreasing, the sources said.

The Chief Minister hoped that the trend would continue in the national capital.

Shanghai tackles virus outbreak, hundreds of flights cancelled

Hundreds of flights at one of China's busiest airports were cancelled Tuesday as Shanghai raced to bring a local coronavirus outbreak under control.

Health officials have tested thousands of staff at Pudong International Airport since a small clutch of Covid-19 cases in the city was linked to several cargo handlers.

China -- where the virus first emerged late last year -- has largely brought the pandemic under control through travel restrictions and lockdowns, but it is now battling a number of domestic outbreaks in different cities.

Shanghai has reported seven local infections linked to the airport this month, with most cases found in the past few days.
